Effect on Emotions
- In the early stages, people think they are their emotions. Every time something tips us one way or the other, when we are in that reactionary consciousness, I look at it like an emotional pinball on a pinball machine from years ago.
- After several decades of meditating and doing the Tai Chi Gong art, you realize that emotions are like the wind; they flow through you and out of you.
- Sometimes they stem from things you were doing and sometimes they stem from other people that you're actually picking up on.
- One of the most profound things that you learn in the early training of Tai Chi Gong is that a human being has the ability to feel beyond their physicalness
Thoughts on Breathing
- Praying with prayer beads and learning to breathe basic energy is at the base of everything that we do. That was handed down from the ancient teachings.
- What we learn is that, everybody knows that they are born of the water and they have their physical umbilical cord cut, we actually have what is referred to as the psychic umbilical cord. It's about an inch to 2 inches higher than our physical one.
- Many talks and scriptures focus on breathing in that area. The moment that energy starts to feed the vortex of the chakras and they stimulate the spokes that come out of the chakras called the nadas, which is sanskrit for spokes, everything changes.
- When we hit puberty, what puts us into this metaphysical second birth, or the wakening of the kundalini, is the pranayama of learning to breathe energy instead of just oxygen. It changes everything.

- My father
Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has radically affected how I experience my emotions because awareness for me, is the foundation of peace.
- If I am triggered by something or if I'm reactive, I know that I'm coming from an old primal place, usually stemming from my childhood that has nothing to do with current reality.
- If I take a pause and a deep breath, and am mindful, I most often can calm myself down and understand that what's in the past is in the past. It's not really happening now.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is how we regulate our nervous system.
- It's how we escape the fight or flight mode where we feel like we're in danger. So I breathe when I'm anxious.
- I breath consciously before I enter a business conversation and I breathe especially when I'm challenged by my children. It keeps me really grounded and gives me perspective.
Suggested Resources
- Book: n/a
- App: I don't use apps. I would start by looking around you and recognizing where you really are.
Role of Mindfulness in Your Singing
- I've had to get out of my mind to sing and to really express. As a vocalist, I was doing studio work for a long time where perfection is a requirement and you can't be off-key, you can't be pitchy.
- I found that the harder I tried and the more concerned I was about hitting a note, usually the more skewed that note was and it would be slightly off.
- That's because I was too much in my head. What I found is that you practice and practice and practice so that the moment you're on stage, or the moment you're recording live, you can let go and trust that your body has that note.
- I think meditation is very similar in the sense that we're getting out of our head. We're getting out of our own way. We're getting out of our mind and we're accessing the part of us that already knows.
- There's no note in any song I've been given that I can't hit. It's the fear that I can't hit the note that obscures my ability to execute.

Be Motivated Using These Tricks
Sunday Nov 07, 2021
Sunday Nov 07, 2021
You can use mindfulness to help your motivation level. Today I’m sharing 5 tricks you can use to help you with motivation. Here’s an example. I bought some tulip and daffodil bulbs and although I've never planted anything like that before, I always think these flowers look amazing in the Springtime, especially after a long winter of cold temperature along with the kinds snow and ice. Tulips and daffodils always cheer me up when I see them in front of someone’s house or in a park. So when I was in Home Depot or Lowe's I saw these bulbs and decided to buy them. They've been in my car for a week or more and I started thinking, if I don't plant these, it is going to be too late.

Book Writing Challenges
- Freestyle talking about things like we're doing here on the show is really easy compared to writing. When you talk you use different inflections, tone, and visual cues to get your point across.
- If you were to take this conversation and transcribe it, it would look a little messy with a lot of run-on sentences, and umms and buts. My partner, Karen, is a speech therapist. She is very concise in her speech and I'm very verbose. Thank goodness she was available to help me with the editing because she knows me so well.
- When Karen first started reading it she said, “you're the king of embedded clauses”. That's a story within a story within a story.
- It's a relatively short book (100 pages), and it took a lot of time and energy to get all the ideas out.
Feedback From The Book
- I've receive a lot of positive feedback. When I receive feedback it warms me in the heart the way nothing else can.
- The book was names as one of the top books to ‘Take You From Surviving To Thriving in 2021' on Thrive Global. It was an honor to be named with a bunch of other great authors.
- What's great about a book is that a hundred years from now someone can pick it up and it can impact their life. I love the ripple effect that it can create.
Memory From The Positive Head Podcast
- An early guest, Dr. Eben Alexander wrote a book called Proof of Heaven. He was a Harvard neurosurgeon and got a lot of attention because he went from one day being healthy, to the next day being in a coma from meningitis.
- His brain was being destroyed by this virus. After a week they said he was too far gone, there's nothing we can do, pull the plug. They did pull the plug and he miraculously came back.
- All he remembered at first was his week journey on the other side. In this case it seemed like time was not a factor. He was shown how time and the universe was structured. It's a fascinating account. It got a lot of attention and Oprah had him on her show.

Is Fear Holding You Back?
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Today is October 31, which is Halloween day here in Canada, and I know in the United States it is as well. The title of my episode today is, is fear holding you back. And fear certainly seems to go along with Halloween, doesn't it? I mean, fear, we think about all those ghosts and goblins and, and all the scary images. And I think that some of us just love the thrill of that fear, the thrill of being scared. We can talk about about the kinds of fear we get from watching a scary movie but is there something in this world that you are so afraid of that it's holding you back from accomplishing what you want to accomplish? I think the answer may be Yes. I believe a lot of us have a fear of success.
Listen & Subscribe on:

Step Out
For some reason, sometimes we think that people who are successful aren't actually that happy, or they may have a lot of money, but they spend more time worrying about what to do with the money than they do being able to enjoy it. People think a lot of different thoughts and have a lot of different opinions like this. Do you have a fear of failure, a fear that if you do take a risk, if you do step out, then maybe you won't succeed? Would failure be worse than even trying in the first place? I don't think it is worse, I think it's better to step out. Try your hand at achieving what you want to achieve.
Is Fear Real?
Go for your dreams. And don't forget that success is only defined the way you define it. Does that mean everything has to go the way you want it to go? Does it mean you have to make a certain amount of money or you have to gain certain popularity with your friends? I did a Mindfulness Mode interview at one time called ‘Fear Is Not Real.’ Do you think fear is real?
I think fear is as real as you make it. Fear is not real was explained by Jaimal Yogis. That was on episode 228. He wrote a book called, Salt Water Buddha. I had a fantastic time talking with Jaimal, I appreciate him so much, including how he lives his life. There is a flow in Jaimal’s life. He is a surfer so it's not surprising that I would feel a sense of water and waves in his personality. Is fear real in your life?
Sticks and Leaves?
‘Surrender To Fear To Reach Peace’ is another episode I published. That was with relationship expert named Erik Newton. I believe it's important to be able to surrender to fear as that act of surrendering can take us through to peace and contentment. The more we resist fear, the worse it can be. The more we resist pain, the more painful it can be. The more we try to resist our emotions, the more they will be difficult to deal with and difficult to bear. I definitely agree with Erik Newton when he talks about how to surrender to fear to reach peace. What's your method of surrendering to fear? I reach that state of surrender through meditation and by allowing my thoughts of fear, worry, or concern, to simply be there. With my clients, I often say, “just imagine you're watching the water in a river. And there are sticks and leaves floating along, bobbing along in the water. And just imagine those are your thoughts. They're just moving along.”
Tune in to listen to the rest of the episode.

Myung Sung: The Korean Art of Living Meditation with Dr. Jenelle Kim
Wednesday Oct 27, 2021
Wednesday Oct 27, 2021
Dr. Jenelle Kim is a wellness and mindfulness expert, who has been teaching a dynamic, movement-based approach to meditation for years. Since the pandemic started, she has noticed a steady increase in people interested in her teachings. Her ideas are to be published later this year in her new book entitled: Myung Sung: The Korean Art of Living Meditation. As a doctor of Chinese medicine, a master herbalist, and a dedicated student of martial arts and Eastern philosophy for more than 30 years, Dr. Kim combines mindfulness, meditation, movement, and natural medicine for an approach to wellness that is truly unique.
To practice Myung Sung, you do not need to schedule time away from your life. You don’t have to sit quietly, forcing your mind to find silence. Instead, you engage in a living meditation, incorporating mindfulness into every aspect of your daily life.
By following the eight keys of Myung Sung, you can experience less stress, avoid conflict, find inner peace, and accomplish your life goals. Myung Sung helps us find a deeper connection with our true selves and re-align our lives on a path that was meant for us.
Dr. Kim did not invent Myung Sung, rather she combined centuries-old practices such as mindfulness and Taoism with approaches that work for a modern audience.
As the daughter of a Korean monk, Dr. Kim began learning meditation, martial arts, and the teachings of the Tao from a young age. She has applied her expert knowledge of medicinal healing as a formulator and co-founder of JBK Wellness Labs, creating the formulas behind high-end beauty, health, and wellness products available at stores such as Whole Foods, Sprouts, Sephora, and Neiman Marcus. This past November, Dr. Kim was the keynote speaker at CosmoProf where she presented on the future of beauty and emerging trends.

Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing means so much to me in all three of those pillars. Medicine is so important to bring oxygen and circulation. Movement is the same as well as the philosophy. As a moment that we can kind of connect and ground ourselves to see clearly the situation in front of us.

Bullying Story
- Chapter 7 of my book is called “It Only Takes One Match To Light A Thousand” and in that chapter I share some instances of bullying or situations like bullying. In those moments I find that if we really can root ourselves in remembering that we're all human, even when people are coming at [us]. Especially in the work world, if you really sat down to ask me, if I were in a room filled with men, did someone want to treat me a little different?
- Growing up, I wanted to be older, I wanted my hair to be darker, because I wanted to be taken so seriously. I constantly remind myself, no matter where I am, no matter who I stand in front of, no matter what circumstance comes in front of me, if I remember that I am connected to all who came before me, then I am rooted. [This applies] particularly to those I feel connected to in my lineage.
- I am connected to all who come after me, my children, the next generation. There's something really beautiful about that and that's what Living Meditation means to me as well.

Suicide, Mindfulness, and Surviving Life
Sunday Oct 24, 2021
Sunday Oct 24, 2021
Sometimes life just seems to flow along and it's not so much about surviving, it's about riding a wave and enjoying it. Other times life feels challenging. It feels like how am I going to get through this moment to the next? How am I going to survive? Well, I don't know if the ‘s’ word from the title of this episode has ever crossed your mind. You know that word suicide? Have you ever thought, oh, gosh, I'm just so discouraged?
Many times I’ve talked with my guests about how to stay focused find contentment in life. I ask them, How do you achieve things in life that matter? Today, this conversation is for you. And I mean, there is a reason you're here and that we’re connected right now. Whatever the time is, whatever the place is, there's a reason that we’re connected at this very moment.

Connecting With Others
It's very sad and unfortunate that so many people are feeling anxiety and discouragement in the world right now. I think you'll find value from today's episode, because what I've done is, I’m focusing on five keywords. And I'm just going to talk about those five things in order. The last word is the one that I personally think can be the most impactful and can help you the most. Take whatever you can from any of these points. If you find one sliver of value here, that's great. It might be one word, or one sentence that speaks to you today. It might be that one of the points may really speak to you. Listen to this episode over and over if you find it meaningful.
Today, I just want to connect with you. Personally, I think connection is invaluable between human beings. It's not always easy, but I think the more we're able to connect somehow, the more our life will take on meaning. That doesn't mean you need to connect with hundreds of people and constantly be searching for more people to connect with you. No, that's not what I'm talking about at all. Because that sounds like a rat race and a goal where we would become scattered and frustrated.
Simpler Than We Think
The first word on my list is a word with only two letters. And it starts with D. And it's such a simple word. I think if you're feeling frustrated and stuck, or you're feeling down and discouraged, this word will be meaningful. Maybe you've lost someone or something in this life, and you're just hurting. Do you have a lot of pain or anger? Well, this word is an important word. The word is do. Do something else. Do something different. If you're sitting down, stand up. If you're walking, stop walking, and stand still. You know, it sounds overly simplified. You know what I think? I honestly think some of the best lessons in the world are such simple lessons. That's why we don't see them. That's why we take so long to learn them because they're hidden in their simplification.
Where Is The Prize?
You'll know that there are lots of books out there about finding the secret treasure or finding the answer to life. Often you get to the end of the book and you discover the answer was hidden in a simple place. Well this word do is just a simple word. It just means to me that you need to do something different from what you're doing now. Do something positive, don't do anything that might harm yourself or someone else but do something that's different from what you're doing currently.
Tune in to listen to the rest of the episode.

Effect on Emotions
- Yoga helped me take mindfulness out of the mind and into the body through breath.
- That in combination with the work in emotional intelligence with Dr. Jeanne Segal and understanding how emotions are processed in the body and that to really be mindful, it's not just of our thoughts, it's of our entire system because our responses show up in many places in our body and to be fully mindful you want to be fully integrated in your awareness.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I got started with yoga and pranayama and breath practices and performance music is all about breathing and phrasing and breath.
- So the quickest way to mindfulness is to be mindful first of your breath because it does what we talk about in that integration of the body and the mind. From that place, if you can't have awareness of your breath, you're probably not being very mindful of other things.

Is Anger Stopping You From Enjoying Life?
Sunday Oct 17, 2021
Sunday Oct 17, 2021
When was the last time you noticed your anger? Was it when you exploded at one of your children? Was it when you lost your cool at work and said something you regretted later? Maybe you got angry, had a meltdown aimed at your partner, and then that nice evening you had planned turned into a nightmare? If any of these scenarios sound similar to an event in your life, you’d probably like to know how to harness that anger. When you get angry, do you justify it? Do you think, well, I had every right to get mad when that happened? I was right and the other person was asking like a jerk.

If you’ve been justifying your anger, you’re like a lot of people. The fact is, it’s not usually a good thing to explode at someone and lose your cool. For one thing, whether you realize it or not, losing your cool is a sign of weakness. It means you’re out of control. You’re not able to control the way you behave with other people.
A lot of people talk about being in control of your emotions. I don’t strive to be in control of my emotions, as much as I strive to be in control of how I react to my emotions.
Your emotions are the body’s way of letting you know that something isn’t right. Something isn’t sitting well with your body, heart and mind.
Your Warning Lights
It’s a lot like the warning lights on your car. If something needs attention, the light comes on to give you a heads up. Maybe the windshield wiper fluid is low. Maybe the tires have lost some air pressure or maybe the engine is overheating.
How are you going to react to any of those warnings? Are you going to explode at the first person you see? Are you going to get angry with the person at the lumber store that puts some bags of gravel into your trunk?
Of course not. You’re going to pay attention to what needs attention and then you’re going to methodically go about making the situation right.
Maybe you’ll go to your mechanic and tell him the engine light has come on and so the engine may be overheating. He’ll check it out and let you know what’s going on.
Angry And Not Sure Why?
There have been times in my life when I got angry in response to my emotions, and didn’t really even know why I was getting so mad at somebody. It turned out that I was upset about some random thing, and I took it out on one of the first people I came across.
There were times when that person was my wife or a family member. Later I didn’t feel good at all about losing my cool over something that didn’t make sense.
Do you notice a level of seething anger, somewhere below the surface of your consciousness? Does it show itself at random times, when it didn’t really make sense to get so mad?
Freedom
A few months after I began to be a daily meditator, I started to experience a level of freedom that was new to me. It was freedom from myself. Freedom from my inner bully; those voices in my head that kept telling me I wasn’t good enough, or I would be a failure, or I wouldn’t be able to earn a living.
Fortunately, I proved my inner bully wrong. I put myself through university by working three jobs. After graduation, I got a full-time job and saved my money so I could buy some income properties.
Have you listened to your inner bully and been able to move forward in spite of those voices? Have you been able to create a life you love, in spite of the odds against you?
Is Joy Missing?
Or are you in a place right now where your anger is preventing you from enjoying your life? The anger you are experiencing is coming from fear, and that fear is coming from your inner bully.
Like I said earlier, listen to your emotions, and then make the decision to push through anyway. If you have a carefully thought-out plan for your life, you’re be able to gradually step towards your goals and while you’re doing it, you’ll enjoy the journey.
You won’t enjoy the journey all the time, but if you are motivated and have the determination you need, you’ll move towards a life of joy, even if it seems slow. A lot of the time, it’s the self-work we do that helps us stay on track, and gradually achieve success.
Is anger stopping you from enjoying your life? Make the decision to keep mindfulness central in your life. Develop a daily practice of meditation and be determined to do the work that needs to be done, rather than pretending everything is fine, or covering up your emotions with alcohol, drugs, shopping, busyness, or something else.
