Effect on Emotions
- It's being able to withstand both painful emotions and feel positive emotions. That's what mindfulness practice has allowed me to do. I don't have to push and pull on either one. I can be with what arises, no matter what it is. Mindfulness in Motion
Therefore
Thoughts on Breathing
- Notice how much you hold your breath. During the day, just notice.
- When I'm running, often, I'm not forcing my breath instead, I will try to let my body react, relax, and let it take a natural breath. Mindfulness in Motion

Bullying Story
- I came from an alcoholic family, I was in and out of my own drinking and addiction, many very addictive behaviors with substances. Therefore
- And I think that this mindful awareness of my own behavior, and realizing that there was something driving me that I was unaware of. As a result of my actions, I would get bullied because other people didn't like what I was doing. Therefore
- So that awareness that there was something else going on, so much deeper, than I could have possibly worked with, to maybe modify my own behavior, or at least, be able to be with it without all the shame and guilt and things. Therefore
- And then when the bullying did happen, having the compassion because that's one of the things in meditation is we develop mind states, one of which is loving kindness and so having the compassion for the person, another person to realize that they too, were coming from some kind of place of often fear, that's what usually it is, we're coming out of fear. Therefore
- It's taken years of therapy, to help me understand that. But in the meditation practice, sitting with memories of that, the thoughts that come up now, the body sensations, especially being able to be with the discomfort, and then also having fond memories that I didn't really remember because there was so much of the kind of bad things that I didn't let them happen. So
- So when you're still or when you do meditation, even mindfulness in motion, when you let the rest of the world drop away, whether it's through in the writing practice the sitting in moving meditation, the rest of the world rep drops away, and joyous memories can come up.

Live An Educated Life; Jellis Vaes
Sunday Jul 17, 2022
Sunday Jul 17, 2022
Jellis Vaes is the founder of The IPS Project, which stands for ‘Inner Path Seekers'. “Jellis believes we all have a voice inside our hearts with which to speak; that is our gift. And we all have something worth saying, even if we don’t always realize it. For a long period in his life, he thought he had no voice at all. For 6 years he went through high school consumed by suicidal thoughts, spending most of his time between the 4 walls of my bedroom – locked away from the world. He says: “I was overcome by feelings I had no words for.”

What Does IPS Stand For?
- IPS stands for Inner Path Seekers
- This project started in 2021. I came up with the idea of creating a platform that just provides educational life topics that we don't learn much anything about from school, or from our parents.
- It touched on subjects like mental health to the mind, relationships, the body, and the brain.
- To sum it up, the platform does that through a podcast and online courses, and practical articles. We're also working on events and looking to buy a piece of land and build a community center where we can do workshops as well.
Lessons Learned By Being A World Traveler?
- I did travel a lot, beginning when I was 18. When I was a teenager I got to a very dark place as I thought life was very boring and dull, and not exciting at all.
- Traveling just opened up the adventure and the freedom and the possibilities that had not seen. So this is why traveling became a lifesaver to me and showed what more there is out there in life. I'm very thankful that I had that opportunity, so …So
What Is Your Life's Purpose?
- I want to help people suffer a little bit less through life. When I was young, I walked very close on the edge between life and death, because I had a lot of dark thoughts about suicide. For instance
- It's been an incredible motivator on why I'm doing what I'm doing. We just know so little about ourselves, which can then lead some people to very dark places.
- I'm grateful for everything that I've done to help people who are struggling in life, or are walking on a very close edge between living and dying. But
Meditation In Your Life…
- There are certain times in my life when I have done way more meditation. But right now I'm at a point where I don't have an actual practice of meditating every day, I would say that I have more other practices of being just mindful. So
- I always go for like a morning walk. and that is a simple way for me to meditate.
- This is just to get my workflow going, but also just to pay attention to my surroundings, feel gratitude for what I'm seeing, and just feel a bit aware of everything around me.
- That is my form of meditation, just a walking meditation. That's something that I do every day, even if it's raining. So there's always something nice to be grateful for.

Effect on Emotions
- It's coming back to that gratefulness. Like, at the end of the day, it could be a tough day. We will get together and just say, “What are the good things that happened?” You start to list one or two and that switches my mindset.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I'm gonna jump in on that one because I gave birth to nine children. I have learned a little bit about breathing.
- Just that physical breathing when you're in the moment, because you notice the tension in your shoulders, and you know, when you're in labor, hard labor, it all comes down to breathing, taking your deep breath, and resting.
- I could just apply that every time I get stressed; that would be amazing.

Bullying Story
- I remember my own childhood, I was not bullied, but I had friends who were and I had to step in.
- But I think about it most of the time unless it's a true gang situation. So what we're seeing, we're not talking about that, right? That is because they're trying so hard. And usually, they're trying so hard to fit in, and everybody kind of knows that they don't have their own thing going right.
- So once you start throwing yourself into something, that's where the child may need the parent to help them cross that bridge. When you're good at something and you do it with passion, you start attracting other people who are also interested in a similar topic.

The Mindfulness Of Ice Cream
Sunday Jul 10, 2022
Sunday Jul 10, 2022
The Mindfulness of Ice Cream is the topic of my episode today. I will be telling a few stories and then talking about the five Mindfulness aspects of Ice Cream. Do you enjoy ice cream? What's your favourite flavour? Sit back, relax and enjoy today's episode about ice cream.

1/ The Anticipation
- Take your time. Take two deep breaths and just imagine what it's going to be like tasting that ice cream. What will the coldness be like? Consider whether the ice cream will be in a bowl or a cone. How will it feel as you hold the bowl in your hand? What is the texture of the bowl? Do you feel the coldness through the bowl? Imagine how the ice cream will feel when it touches your tongue. Take some time to anticipate the upcoming experience. Can you anticipate the flavor and the texture? Can you imagine the sensation as you swallow the delicious ice cream?
2/ The Texture and Flavour
- Now you're experiencing the actual ice cream and you take a bit on your tongue. Consider the experience whether you're using a spoon or tasting it from a cone. Put it in your mouth and on your tongue. Experience the flavor, the texture, and the iciness and allow yourself to enjoy the experience.
3/ Can I Preserve This Memory?
- What would it be like to preserve the memory of this moment? Can you imagine that? You're experiencing the delicious flavor and texture. What would it be like if you could preserve the memory of this very instant in time?
4/ How Does It Make You Feel?
- How does this make you feel at this very moment? What is the experience like for you? How do you feel in your body? How do you feel as you swallow the ice cream? What is it like to anticipate the next delicious taste of this ice cream?
5/ Can I Be Passionate?
- If you could remember it, can you be passionate about this memory?
Is this a passionate experience for you? What could make it more passionate? Just think about the passion that may be connected with this moment. Passion feeds us in our lives and you can allow yourself to go there. Allow yourself to be 100% in the moment with this experience. Allow yourself the pleasure of this moment in time. Now that you have this memory, you can come back to it anytime you want.

- There is no condemnation of any emotion. We understand it as part of the way our mind and our body and our soul informs us.

Bullying Story
- I had a conversation last night with a client who has high levels of anxiety. Much of it had to do with neglect, abuse, and bullying in his history. I was sharing with him about the magnificence of our nervous system and how anxiety helps us understand what we need.
- Rather than resisting, fighting against or condemning anxiety, we need to allow it to inform us in our bodies and our nervous system about what's going on so we can attend to it.
- If we can learn how to sooth our nervous system, we can come out of that state.

Effect on Emotions
- So mindfulness brings me right here into the present moment with the light of my consciousness.
- Whatever anxiety is there that I choose to bring into it, and look at it with the light of consciousness in the present moment.
- So being mindful of it, loving it, choosing to bring light to it.
Thoughts on Breathing
- If you're not breathing, you're not in the present moment. So when you're in the past or the future, you're usually holding your breath.
- It's breathing. It's critical. It's foundational.

Bullying Story
- I've never shared this publicly. My family knows it. But in sixth grade, I grew up in a beautiful city called Columbia, Maryland, where they bussed in people from the inner city of Baltimore.
- There was a gang of girls picking on a little friend of mine, and I was tall for my age. I had no clue what was going on. I said, “Pick on someone your own size”. Consequently, they picked on me, they were brutal. There were about 10 of them and they would find me in the halls, would wait for me after the bus line, and beat me up.
- I didn't want to go to school and I couldn't tell my mom. They told me if I told anyone I would get beat up more and they'd hurt my family.
- So the only thing that saved me was that one of their two gang leaders shot her boyfriend in sixth grade. She got put away and the other one became pregnant and she got sent to a juvenile home. That broke up the gang and so there was peace in there.
- I was so bullied and I had no clue because I was coming from peace and self-respect. But that turned my reality upside down because I almost didn't want to live at that point.
- I couldn't really say it because it sounded so ridiculous for sixth graders to be afraid for your life.
- Forgiving everything else that came afterward, forgiving those girls with light and love … just the techniques that I teach melt everything in its path and they work for every single trauma. The mental work has helped the Parkland shooting students who have lived through that event and helped them to with the power of my light.

Effect on Emotions
- It helped me be more self-compassionate, less anxious, more focused, and more measured. So
- So I think it helped me create those retreats or those air pockets in my life that I need. Because I tend to just be an over worker, I love what I do. There's a lot of need in the world. So it helped me be more present with myself and not let my mind be a runaway train.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Above all, I love the box breathing method. So
- It's a nice four-count holding and then releasing. So
- The reason I like it so much is that it's sustainable because sometimes if I make things too grand and too complex, I might stay with it for a while, but then fall off track. So

Bullying Story
- I think it was very commonplace, like in middle school, I was very keenly aware of the bullying that was happening. So
- I was that loud person that would stand up if I saw someone being hurt.
- Understanding the impact on one's life when these things happen, and how to help teach social-emotional skills and kindness are things that weren't necessarily present on the school bus in the 1980s. So
- Therefore, mindfulness would have helped me probably be a little bit more self-compassionate, and it would have helped me deal with that override of anxiety and fear that I was doing in those moments. So
- I love the exercise of thinking like, what would your past self say to yourself? Or what would you want your future self to say to the now. If I could look back I would say to myself, this is going to help you develop your empathy, this is going to help you be more mindful in how you show up and you contribute to the world.
- Don't internalize the messages of the meanness of the people, doing this kind of bullying that doesn't define you. Worth The Risk

Effect on Emotions
- I think emotions are something that most folks are afraid of.
- When I was younger, going through a lot of trauma, we were taught to hide our emotions, to stuff our emotions, to suppress our emotions, to the point where we were numb.
- I had to learn and relearn how to feel my emotions and differentiate between sadness and anger, to have the allowance, to feel those emotions deeply, and to allow them to have a voice and to express them in a healthy way.
- Emotions are our compass to let us know where we are in life and whether we need to course-correct. They're actually our body and soul's way of getting in touch with us
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is such a wonderful, transformational tool. It really helps us to get connected to our breath. It's free.
- Most of us do not breathe properly. We breathe up here, like very shallow. We do not do belly breath and the belly breath is just so relaxing.
- Watch a baby breathe, they make nice, deep breaths, and it's a way to calm your emotions and it's also very healing.
- So if we have any blocks or any trauma stuck in our bodies, even from previous lifetimes, it really helps to relieve and to free ourselves from those blocks and in our energy field so that we can really live in the present moment and be who we really are, which is why we're here.

Bullying Story
- When I was eight years old, I came here from Italy and I didn't know the language.
- I went to Catholic school and as children are, I was made fun of, teased, and, laughed at because I didn't understand the language. It was very difficult for me to express myself.
- I just remember crying one day, we were having a test, and some, I don't even know who it was took my pencils, and I couldn't communicate. I just sat there and just cried. The nun was like, where are your pencils, and I couldn't even articulate that I had them, but somebody took it, and I couldn't even say that, and I would just go home crying.
- Being a mother of two, I watched my children being bullied on the bus, being bullied at school. They used to knock my son's books on the floor, and you would have to pick them up.
- As a parent, you just want to protect your child, you don't want them to ever go through that.
- To me, bullying is power over somebody so that you feel better and I think that's just children's way of empowering themselves.
- The book, Once Upon A thought is a children's book. It's like, if everyone knew who they really were, then you wouldn't have to ever bully anyone. Because you know that you are special, you know that you are unique. Once Upon A Thought
- There is nobody like me, and there's no one like you and there's no one like them. It's not necessary to bully to get that power from somebody else, because you have that power within you. Once Upon A Thought
- I think teaching children breathwork and just how important and special they are, and giving them that presence, that attention, and that love they desire from their parents is just so important hopefully the bullying will stop. Once Upon A Thought

Dad, Father, A Treasured Honor is my topic for today, since it is Father's Day here in Canada. I have put together 7 suggestions that can help you on your quest to being a good father. As a father, I have given a lot of thought and effort into being as good a father as possible. I'm grateful to have a son who shows strong traits of mindfulness, respect, consideration, and generosity. My father was also a man who gave me space and wise advice when I asked for it.

Here are 7 tips that will help you be a good father:
1/ Listen
Being a good father is about being a good listener. This is something I constantly work on with my son and also with people I teach and work with. Listen to the feedback that people provide you. It is often hidden or disguised, but if you are open to hear it, you will begin to notice.
2/ Be A Good Role-model
Live your best life and remember to walk the walk and talk the talk. If you're going to do a certain thing in your life or behave in a certain way, then make sure that you're okay with your child doing that same thing. They are watching you and are aware of what you do. If you do something and you are giving the impression that you're okay with this particular action, then that speaks way louder than words.
3/ Emotions
Many people push emotions aside, including me. There have been times in my life when I was not willing or able to face my emotions. Be aware of your emotions, and don’t be afraid to share them. Once you're aware of your own emotions, then you can handle them in a more healthy way. You can decide to embrace them, share them, or keep them to yourself. The following can help you manage your emotions: meditation, self-hypnosis, running, swimming, or being out in nature.
4/ Give Space
It is important to give space to our children so they can learn and grow in a natural way. This is one thing that my father was very good at; he gave me space to grow. He was not one of those people who smothered their children, rather he gave me space to learn and grow on my own. It takes courage and discipline to step back and give your child space but I highly recommend it.
5/ Be Open and Flexible
As much as you can, be open and flexible with your children. As parents, we have our own ideas about how things should be and sometimes we can be too controlling. Guide your children in what they do and at the same time, be as open and flexible as you possibly can. As you become more open, I believe you will begin to feel the honor of being a father, and therefore you'll understand the reason I entitled this episode, Dad, Father, A Treasured Honor.
6/ Give Advice When Asked
If you follow the above suggestions, your child will be more likely to ask you for advice. Take the time to advise in a thoughtful way, using stories and examples to help explain your points.
7/ Be Consistent and Grounded
If you practice mindfulness, you are most likely a consistent and grounded person. I'm extremely proud of being the father of my son, Ben. I learn a tremendous amount from him due to the fact that he is a mindful and wise person. My father passed away in 2019 and I'm grateful to have had him as my father because he gave me space to learn and grow. He also gave me wise advice at various time, including advice to date my wife before we went out for the first time. I've been married to her for over twenty years now, so I’m grateful for the advice given to me by my dad.
