Effect on Emotions
- The biggest thing is with the presence and being able to take my brain back when the thoughts and the monkeys highjack my brain. Mindfulness is a way for me to calm myself, get centered, and reclaim my brain.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is huge. That's where I tell people to start, actually. That's the least expensive and lowest impact way is to just breathe through your nose.
- When our sympathetic nervous system takes over and we are feeling like there's a threat, we are not breathing well and we're panting or moving our chest just to reclaim breathing by taking slow deliberate breaths through our nose and telling our body it's safe, I'm in charge, I'm okay, no one's chasing us, we're safe. That is where it all begins.
- Breathing is where it's at, baby!

Bullying Story
- When I was eleven years old I lost my first friend to suicide. She was twelve years old. I remember I had gone to one of my first funerals and it was the first time I had ever been in a Catholic church … I remember seeing this family completely destroyed. My mother made the choice for me to go back to school that day. …
- There were some boys in my class who noticed that I was different (I was still wearing my funeral clothes). I told them that I'd been to a funeral and they started making fun of me.
- They started saying horrible things which I now know in hindsight as my adult self is that they were trying to deal with an unimaginable situation. [They said things like] … she probably took one look at you and jumped out the window just looking at your face. They said horrible things and I was in such shock or so insecure that I just took it. I didn't fight back or say anything.
- Now, I would tell the teacher, or I would stand up and say ‘you guys are being first-class jerks. I went through a horrible situation. How dare you make fun of someone who's in such a horrible situation?'

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has caused me to also carry my emotions on my sleeve. I can cry easily, not just when I'm sad, but just when I'm overwhelmed, and with warm feelings and love. So I'm very emotional that way.
- I have kind of corrected my anger. I don't fly off the handle like I used to in the early days, but I drank a lot back then. I've always been able to hold my emotions right there on my sleeve.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I believe breathing is one of the most important things when it comes to mindfulness because that is life. Oxygen is life. One of the things you may not know about me is that I was also a stage hypnotist. One of the major things about hypnosis is the breathing.
- If you're laying in bed and you can't get to sleep, if you'll just breathe and think about the breath you're taking, inhaling and exhaling. Put everything else out of your mind and just think about breathing. You can feel the life that's going into your body. I promise you, if you do that correctly, you're going to be asleep.

Bullying Story

We both experienced and saw bullying at it's worst. She was in seventh grade, which is puberty. That's where a lot of bullying will happen.
- I was a bully when I was a kid, one time only. I'll tell you the story. It's a lesson I've held and learned from my whole life … (tune into the podcast to hear Steve's story).

Bring Calm To Your Troubled Mind
Tuesday May 12, 2020
Tuesday May 12, 2020
Bring calm to your troubled mind. I'll talk about four topics, specifically Breathing, Mantras, Meditation, and Sleep.
Breathing - Make a time twice each day to breathe at least 30 deliberate, deep breaths. Do an inhale through the nose if possible and then pause and exhale as much as possible. Use a counting pattern like inhale for 6, pause for 2, and exhale for 4 counts. You can do breathing exercises while walking, stretching, or enjoying nature.
Mantras - Create a personal mantra that has deep meaning for you. Take some time with a notebook and jot down words that are important to you. You can get some ideas by searching online for mantras that work for other people. Settle on a mantra for yourself that feels good, isn't too long or too short, and then commit it to memory. Every time you feel some anxiety or self-bullying happening in your mind, quickly shift to your mantra. This will help you feel calmer and more relaxed.
Meditation – Find a place that is comfortable and sit on the floor on a mat or sit in a straight-backed chair. Focus on the flame of a candle if you wish and you may want to use some essential oil in a diffuser. If you're new to meditation, use a guided meditation or nature sounds. A timer can be helpful so you won't be wondering how much time has passed. The app, Insight Timer is an excellent tool to help with meditation. You can use it only as a timer, or for nature sounds or you can find many guided meditations on the app.
Sleep - Avoid your phone, device, or screens of any kind for two or three hours before bedtime. Also, don't expose yourself to the news in the three hours before bed. Set your phone to airplane mode, turn it off, or turn off wi-fi if you have your phone anywhere near you while sleeping. Also, it's recommended to turn off the wi-fi in your home during sleep time. Eating food just before bed can also affect your sleep. Some recommend a cold shower in the hour or two leading up to bedtime, especially if you've been having a tough time getting to sleep or sleeping soundly. Caffeine can disturb your sleep, so avoid coffee, tea, or chocolate in the afternoon or evening.
Let me know if these suggestions helped you to be calmer and if you have an added suggestion, please email me at bruce@mindfulnessmode.com. I'll mention your suggestion on an upcoming episode.

Creativity and Mindfulness
Listen & Subscribe on:
iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify
How do mindfulness and creativity work together? One of our mindful tribe listeners has reached out to me and asked me to do a creativity meditation. And I wanted to talk about how creativity can help us during this pandemic, or really anytime. Many of you have lost jobs and you're not sure what's going to happen with your employment. Maybe you don't know if your job will still exist. After the quarantine, mindfulness can help you get in touch with your creative mind.
From there, you may realize how you can pivot. At this time, it may open up in your thought process exactly where you need to move to and at the same time, your creativity can help you become more mindful. So it can work both ways. And that can cause the light to come on in your mind.
Some of the best ideas and innovations have come to people during challenging times during strife. So the first thing is welcome new ideas and be open to being creative. Allow yourself to let your mind go where it wants to go. Allow your thoughts to go on a tour, to travel to wherever to it might take you. Don't try to predict it. Don't try to make this thing forced. Just let it happen.
Now a lot of us get so wrapped up in our lives or our jobs, our structures, that we push creativity away. We start to think we don't need creativity in our lives. And we just need our brain to be centered and focused on that same old thinking process.
Scientists have known for centuries that the creative process comes through forms of mindfulness. Now of course, it hasn't always been called Mindfulness.
The Art of Thought
In 1926, Graham Wallace wrote The Art Of Thought. And The Art Of Thought is a book that's all about training our minds in the creative process. Creativity requires freedom in our thinking. And there's a point where it also requires a certain amount of constraint. So I'll explain that. Let me guide you through the process of opening up to your creativity.
4 Stages of Creativity
1. There are actually four stages of the creative brain. And the first stage is allowing your brain to roam around freely, being open to new thoughts, being willing to use your imagination and let it happen. And if you're open, you'll start to gather information and that can be random information. It can see messy and disorganized and you might feel like it makes no sense at all. Just allow your mind to go where it wants to. Allow your mind to entertain thoughts that in the past, you probably would have pushed away.
2. The second stage of the creative brain is letting those thoughts incubate, let them brew while you sleep or while you exercise, or while you're taking long walks in nature. Do what you enjoy and let those thoughts go where they want. Don't allow your mind to be too stimulated at this point.
If you're playing video games or watching TV, that isn't the best thing to be doing at this stage. Just do something that will allow your brain to process these thoughts. Maybe you enjoy cooking, or organizing, maybe baking bread is your thing. Just allow yourself the space to let those thoughts progress and move forward. Maybe you're painting, creating some kind of art, doodling, or maybe you're doing some kind of mindfulness coloring.
3. The third stage is when your ‘aha’ moment will come to you. This will be a moment of creative insight that suddenly pops into your brain. It might happen at the second just as you're waking up in the morning, or maybe just as you're falling asleep at night. Suddenly a thought will come into your mind and you'll realize it's actually a revelation.
Maybe you're writing some music or playing an instrument, and you have a sudden realization. Mindfulness will help you be open to this new idea, a sudden thought that comes forward from your subconscious.
4. The fourth stage is when everything comes together. This is called the verification stage. You identify your aha moment and in your cognitive mind you put the pieces together and everything begins to make sense. Your massive pool of random thoughts has formed itself into a laser beam of light pointing at a specific solution or a process.
Everything suddenly starts to make sense and you can see how the pieces will potentially fit together. It's important to just let this process happen. Don't push it or try to speed up the process. Just be open to letting it happen on its own. Allowing yourself to use mindfulness in all its forms will help you move through these four stages.
The more you can let go and allow your creative mind to explore, the more you'll move through these stages. If you're a musician, allow yourself to improvise, to just freely let some music happen. It doesn't matter what it sounds like, just allow it to be free. Now apply this thinking and do whatever you like to do. As I mentioned, maybe it's cooking or organizing, or maybe it's drawing or painting.
Allow yourself to be free and open about what appears on that sketchpad or on that canvas. Just use the colors and let them happen and don't overthink it. Right now let's explore this mindful place where you can let go, where you can be open to new thoughts.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has allowed me to be more aware of my emotions and has allowed me to experience my emotions with less judgment.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is our anchor to the present moment. You can't breathe in the past or the future so any time we connect with our breath, we connect with the present moment. Breathing also bridges the mind and the body, so when we connect with our breath, we create harmony between the mind and the body.
Suggested Resources

- App: I don't use apps for mindfulness but I've heard www.Calm.com is good and also the Sam Harris app www.WakingUp.com
Bullying Story
- When I was growing up I was very quiet. I never really spoke and when I was a child I was made fun of for being very quiet. At the time, I didn't really notice how much it affected me because I was a very good athlete so my mode of expressing myself was always through my physical body.
- At the time I didn't really think all that much of it. Fast forward to my adult years and even up to this day, I notice any time that I want to express myself, speak in front of a group doing teaching or workshops or even doing podcasts, I notice that wounded child still coming up for me that was made fun of for never speaking.
- When I look back at that experience and work with clients that have been bullied, it is understanding that whoever the bully is, is really ultimately a bully to themselves.
