Effect on Emotions
- I don't wear my emotions out front very often. But you get me talking, especially on stage about my wife, about some moments in life and I'll start getting teary-eyed up there. And it's not that I mind showing that emotion at all. But I want to keep my stuff together. So it's bringing me back to a moment and going okay, you're here. It's cool to show the emotional side because it shows you as a human. Now, let's keep your stuff together and it's not coming from a negative place. Build to Business Freedom
Thoughts on Breathing
- I've tried a lot of breathing techniques and I haven't really put the time and effort and energy into learning different breathing techniques. I am a little fascinated by them and I do explore them every once in a while. But I can tell you, for me, the focus is better at this point in time and breathing because I want my farm in the dark and listening to podcasts while I'm doing it. And doing that allows me to get laser-focused on the companies and business and that's been tremendous for me. Build to Business Freedom

Bullying Story
- Growing up as a kid, I was the youngest of three boys and I was a runt and tiny, tiny dude and getting picked on more by my brothers. Being put in sleeping bags and rolled downstairs. I got locked in a gas dryer once upon a time.
- My brothers were bigger, tough dudes and now the tables have turned later in life. They're not as tough as they thought they were, but four years in the Marine Corps and 20 years of living, you know, you grow up and you learn a few things. And I don't know for sure if mindfulness would have helped me back then, because I was dealing with more on the physical side of things. But I wonder if I would have stood up for myself a little bit more.
- As a little kid, the answer was to run to mom, run to dad, and they would play defender. I wonder if I would have, at that point, been aware enough to stand on my feet. Yeah. It was really, really cool to watch. Build to Business Freedom

Effect on Emotions
- Meditation has helped me be less reactive. I recently started meditating regularly. I don't meditate every day, but I'm meditating more often. And I really believe that when I do that, my day is much more positive. I'm less reactive and much more able to take on stress throughout my day.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Two different things. One is I actually did some breathwork sessions with someone in Denver when my wife and I lived there. It absolutely was like a psychedelic experience. Without psychedelics, it was unbelievable. I absolutely thought it was a game-changer. And I was so grateful. During the first session, I cried halfway through, like, it was so amazing.
- The other thing that I do is take breaths, three seconds in and pause, and five seconds out and pause. So the entire breath is 10 seconds. And that really helps me calm down and activate my parasympathetic nervous system. And I do that, actually, before my workouts and at different times throughout the day.

Bullying Story
- This is a very personal topic for me because I actually was bullied all the time in elementary school. So what happened was, we had a bus driver, who was very elderly, and he basically just didn't care about what happened on the bus, because he was like, at the end of his career, and he just didn't give a crap and so there was basically no enforcement of anything on the bus. As a kid, I didn't look like I do today; I was a very skinny kid who was not very outgoing. I wasn't very self-confident.
- The other part of this equation was my dad. He was a high school vice principal and so being a vice principal, there was always an emphasis on education. But he also would always say don't fight back and don't do anything if someone does something to you. And I understand why he said that.
- But basically, then what happened was, I was bullied on the bus all the time. Kids would take my jacket and smear it on the ground during winter when it was all snowy out and dirty. On the bus, one kid even lit my hair on fire with a lighter and that was pretty tough for me. Because basically, my dad and my parents told me don't do anything.
- I understand why they did that. But I wish I had the tools that I do now in terms of how to process that or deal with it, or, you know, just approach that situation differently. But as a kid in elementary school, you don't really have those tools in your toolbox. That makes me feel very protective of people who are bullied today because now I'm in a position where I'm physically bigger than 98% of the humans on Earth. Just because I've worked out for 25 years. And so I want to make sure that people don't get picked on because I don't want people to go through what I went through.

Effect on Emotions
- Whenever I am mindful of where I'm at and where I'm going, I just feel more empowered. The less that I do, the anxiety is just not there. In fact, there's a little more excitement and energy to actually get where I want to be.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I'm a big believer in breathing. It's how I fall asleep at night. There are times when I would sit in bed and if I get really anxious or nervous, or if there's something going on the next day, I would just focus on the standard breathing.
- I think it was in Karate Kid where he learns how to read that block of ice and I just thought that's kind of goofy.
- I remember thinking, I'm just gonna breathe and that was the first time I ever started focusing on breathing. Everybody has moments of anxiousness or nervousness. And when I play the piano, whether it's in front of a church or for whatever, I have to remember, if I don't breathe, my leg starts to bounce up and down like that. I don't need that going on. I'm a big believer in breathing properly, mindful breathing,

Bullying Story
- There were some friends when we were in fourth grade. We noticed there were five kids that were going to a bus and catching a bus, they'd come to our school and then catch another bus to another school, and they'd have to wait around for 15 or 20 minutes. They were not part of our group; they were different. And it led to fighting just for a week or so.
- It was something in mindfulness if we had even stopped to think that these are kids just going to another school and they live in our neighborhoods and the fear that some of them may have when we started seeing something, especially in fights, just waiting for a bus trying to mind their own business, the fear that they must have had to come to school, it hurts.
- One positive out of that is one of the kids that I remember; he ended up coming to our school three years later and became one of our best friends.

Effect on Emotions
- I'm old, I had all my emotions removed in the seven days I never would have survived. They're gone. They're just gone.
- I was brought up at a time when your emotions should never, never appear in the room with you. I mean, we didn't have them. And so I'm afraid to a great extent, I still don't have them and maybe humor is the way I deal with my emotions, for the most part.
Thoughts on Breathing
- His name is James Nestor, and he just wrote the book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. It is a wonderful book, and appreciate it and read the whole thing. Thanks to him, I am learning to close my mouth when I read.
- It's simple. There's nothing elaborate or crazy about it. A lot of us know now about box breath, square breath, relaxing relaxation techniques, but just the simplicity of especially when you go to sleep at night, keep your mouth closed.

Bullying Story
- Bullying is such a universal subject and in my life, I more than once had to kind of go against the grain. My career was such that, very often, I was the only girl in the room, and men as you know, have a very subtle way of bullying women when they feel that their territory is being encroached upon. So I think I learned kind of early in my adult game

Effect on Emotions
- I tend to be a pretty even-keeled guy; it has helped me a lot. So the highs aren't too high, and the lows aren't too low. And so I think similar to speaking, when we were talking about what are the things you can and can't control, I think that that's true just in life in general, regardless of whether you're on a stage or not. Therefore
Thoughts on Breathing
- Whenever you are backstage, I mean, there's a lot of speakers who do a lot of different things. And some are listening to music to hype them up. And some just want to be very quiet and still and just focus on their breathing. And I think you really have to figure out what works best for you. Therefore
- So with breathing, I think you need to take some long breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. That can really kind of slow your heart rate and just calm some of the nerves or anxiety that you may feel. That can certainly be very effective. Therefore

Bullying Story
- I remember several years ago, I was speaking and I did a lot in the education space speaking for school assemblies. One time I was speaking and it was like the Friday before spring break. It was at the end of the day, and so the only thing standing between several hundred teenagers and spring break was me. And so they don't care at all what I had to say. So
- So partway through the presentation, I remember the announcement comes over the PA system, that the girl's volleyball team was dismissed to go to their game. So they had an away game. And so you've got a couple of dozen girls all over this gymnasium, standing up and starting to leave.
- Then there were a bunch of teenage guys just being goofy and dumb and they started standing up and leaving. All of a sudden, we've got 30, 40, 50 people all over the room just leaving. Some were clearly supposed to leave and some were clearly not supposed to. There was just kind of like this chaos of this moment. Therefore
- I remember one time I was speaking and a dog comes running into the room and just comes zipping around like nobody was paying attention and everybody was distracted. I remember one time speaking at a camp in this metal building. And there was a big storm that came in and it was hailing like really, really bad. It was super loud and it felt like this building was gonna collapse. We're all gonna die at any moment. Therefore

Effect on Emotions
- I don't react to them, I can identify them and go, Oh, this is a fear, oh, this is anxiety, oh, this is a sadness, and then not react to them, identify it, kind of nurture it internally like, okay, you got this, and then go into a little bit more analytical place of what to do with it at the moment.
- And if I did something I need to deal with maybe I need to give myself those 15 minutes to really feel it. And then go back into activity. What it does is allows me to cancel a negative thought, or to not have my day go off the rails because I got angry or I got sad about something or something that came in that I wasn't expecting, I can really put it in its right place and then reset.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I noticed when I need to stop and take a full breath in. We all tend to do this to the point that when we're busy, like I gotta get this done. Oh, you're panting stop and breathe. Let your brain let your body feel where it's all coming from in the body. Relax into this, then go into the activities. And the breathing I noticed is a big, big deal.

Bullying Story
- I was bullied a lot as a kid. I was chased home, spit on, and teased. There was a lot of bullying as a young child and I think if I had been taught mindfulness, I would have realized this wasn't about me, it was about them. It was something broken in them, maybe something going on in their home. I think if I had understood the bigger picture to forgive and let that go; to not just see them as bullies, but see them as individuals that just had brokenness they weren't dealing with, even as children, then I could have not attached those to myself for so many years.
- I was the choir geek. I was the one that had bad hair and braces. My brother was captain of the football team. He was a senior and I was a freshman. I remember his friends even picking on me or throwing footballs at my head in class.
- I didn't understand then that mindfulness could have helped me just let it go. Let them go and find their own journey. It'll catch up with them, you just stay true to yourself and evolve.
- I just want to hug them and say, it's okay. These are others projecting their own stuff. Everybody has their own brokenness, and they're dealing with it in different ways.

- He is a fellow Canadian, who is dedicated to bringing joy and hope to the world and does it through dance. Gurdeep uses social media as his way to share. He inspired soldiers on a Navy warship and taught firefighters at a firefighting training base.
- He records short videos. And his videos have had over 25 million views on social media. And he continues to spread positivity around the globe.
- He lives in the northwestern corner of Canada in the Yukon. His joy just spills out. Bhangra is the type of dance he teaches. In short, he teaches you how to do it in some of the videos.
- One of his social media followers posted this message; “I'm subscribed to your channel and you always brings a smile to my face. Bhangra is such a joyful dance, it should be a part of everyone's day.”
- Gurdeep Pandher believes that joy, hope, and positivity will lift you up and give you a boost. He wants to spread joy throughout the world. Bruce's Comments About Positivity
- I enjoy an hour every day walking or running doing breathing exercises. It's just wonderful to be able to do Wim Hof breathing and other practices that energize and make me feel great. Most importantly, it helps me to celebrate my life.
- For the past two days I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with twenty-five inspiring kids in a school near me. As you know, I often spend time in schools covering for teachers who are absent and the last two days have been extraordinary. The children understood mindfulness like so many children do; they simply live it and breathe it; not necessarily because it has been formally taught, but because it is a natural part of how children see the world.
- I believe this is why I connect with Gurdeep and his videos. They are a pure expression of mindfulness and positivity.

Effect on Emotions
- There are a lot of challenges that I do face. My life is not rainbows and cotton candy clouds and worlds. But what I realized, and the way I looked at it is, I cannot control what happens around me. But I can control how I'm going to react to the situation.
- I take control of how I'm going to react, as opposed to letting the people or situation dictate it. So I think that's the way that I focus on it is because I'm behind the driver's seat with the help of the steering wheel, I'm going to actually get where I need to go, but not let anxiety overtake it. I'm going to be grounded through the process.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is really important because I think what happens is the fact that I think we breathe because that's just what we naturally do. But when it's purposeful deep breaths, and you're listening to yourself, when you're breathing, it just calms and slows things down. Autobiography
- You're able to actually undertake it. I think when we have anxiety, our breath, our breathing, just speeds up and our heart rate goes up. But then, even amidst the storm, if you just sort of calm it down and just breathe, and slow it down, you're able to handle it.
- And I guess people around me said, the reason we'd like to rely on you is that no matter what happens, you're still calm. And I said, because if I'm not calm, and everyone else around me is not feeling it. If I'm not calm, then they're going to panic. But if I'm calm, there's that calming sense. Now, inside, I may be turbulent trying to figure out how to resolve it. But I'm still very calm. Just let's resolve this. Autobiography

Bullying Story
- I still remember that in primary school, just one day. It literally felt like so many students just ganged up on me for no reason whatsoever, not in a physical way, but in a psychological way.
- In high school, it was like, there were instances when you would get bullied. I would say was not a good time for me. I was awkward, shy, and quiet. Maybe that's why it was easy to pick on someone like me.
- I wasn't an athlete. I wasn't a person who had gotten into trouble. I wasn't in the band or arts. I was just this nameless, faceless person among 500 students.
- But I will say at that point, mindfulness never really factored in. It's only later that I can reflect back to say that those instances, you know, have sort of reinforced that. I need to treat people with respect, I need to treat people with care. It's also about listening to other people, so they have an avenue and a way to share. Autobiography

What is the Origin of the Word “Afformations”?
- I invented the word Afformations. You can learn more about afformations at the official afformation website, which is afformations.com.
- So as a keynote speaker, one of the things I like to do with my audiences is have a little fun, and I like to say, Alright, everybody, we're gonna stand up and say an affirmation just like they taught us to do. So everybody says, I am rich, and everybody goes, I am rich. Do you know, what happens next? Everyone starts laughing.
- And I literally said, What are you laughing at? And they go, Well, I'm not rich. And I say but you just said you were, and they go, Yeah, but I don't believe it. See, now isn't that the funny thing? That is the irony of the affirmation method is, we've been taught to say these statements that we want to be true. But for most of us, in fact, we just don't believe it.
- So imagine if you had a smartphone, and it didn't work 75% of the time, right? Would you keep using that phone or you would not keep using that phone? Would you trade
it in for something better? - So I invented a better phone and use that analogy. That is my point about afformations as opposed to the old affirmation? An afformation is an empowering question.
- Now, why is this so incredibly effective? Think about what the human mind does. In fact, that's how I discovered those formation formations, 25 years ago. In fact, in the book, I talked about how I discovered it.
What Makes You Tick?
- When I was 25 years old, I decided to commit suicide because I didn't know my purpose here on earth. And so I was very depressed, very frustrated. I had been reading all those self-help books for many, many years. You see, I grew up poor in a rich neighborhood.
- I had never had money, never had any success but I wanted to be successful. I wanted to have nice things and stuff like that. But I just could never put it together as hard as I was working. That's why I decided to take my own life when I was 25 years old.
- Now, at the very last minute, my life was spared. I didn't know why at the time, but I decided to devote the rest of my life to serving God and serving humanity as best I could, while I was still here on the earth. The problem was, I didn't know why I was here on the earth. It took me five years of study and introspection and reading all these spiritual books, to find my purpose.
Success Anorexia and What It Means
- Who I work with are entrepreneurs, experts, athletes, and people like that. So their income is dependent upon their actions. So people say, Well, I'm posting all the time on social media and I'm not getting any response. I'm creating these lead magnets and nobody wants them. I'm trying all these funnels, but they're not working. I was following all the gurus, I've tried webinars, I've tried Facebook ads, I've tried all of this stuff, but I'm still not where I want to be. And I feel overwhelmed, I'm procrastinating, I don't have the focus that I want and I have all these distractions.
- And I say, Okay, I hear what you're saying. But here's what I want you to know. You don't have 99 problems. You don't even have 10 problems. You actually only have one problem that's causing all these other problems. The way that I teach it is called, Head Trash.
- Head Trash is formed by this condition that I discovered 25 years ago, called Success Anorexia. Success Anorexia is a condition that causes someone to starve themselves of success.
