Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness is great. It's allowed me to first recognize the positive emotions as well as the negative emotions in my life and seek out ways to mitigate the negative and accentuate the positive.
[show-notes-emotions]
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is something I practice every morning. Breathing is unusual. You can do it without thinking or with thinking.
- It's probably the most under-represented form of health optimization there is. I think you can achieve almost anything through great breath-work.

Bullying Story
- There was a situation that took place about 18 years ago when I was getting ready for the world championships. I was at single digit body fat, really low. Body fat so low that you could see the muscles contract in my face when I ate. The diet my coach had me on at the time involved rice cakes.
- This person comes up to me and says, you can't eat rice cakes, you'll get fat. I wasn't that mindful at the moment.

Effect on Emotions
- I get to enjoy the good emotions. I get to understand what some of what we call bad emotions are telling me. It's a feedback loop. For example what is anger telling me, what is fear telling me? If I understand those things and label them, negative feelings go down.
- We get to experience the richness of emotion like music, we get to hear all the notes, and to feel it in your body.
- So now, because of mindfulness, I get to feel love at such a rich and deep level.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is everything. Breathing is our connection to life and when you breathe in, (the word inspiration means ‘to breathe into').
- If there was only one thing I could ever teach, it would be breath work, because our breath is connected to our nervous system which is connected to how we function.
- I believe you can control everything with your breath.

Bullying Story
- Bullying shows up in my practice all the time. The bullies are often the adults. A lot of times, teachers are doing the bullying.
- I had a client who was really distressed because she wanted to lose weight, but she was being bullied at work. No one at work believed her. There were two women at work who were gossiping and saying mean things.
- The manager in this situation was not mindful at all; he was having his own problem with his daughter. As a result, he couldn't see to fix the situation.

Natural Nootropics to Enhance Meditation & Calm Your Mind; David Tomen
Wednesday Sep 16, 2020
Wednesday Sep 16, 2020
David Tomen knows firsthand the power of nootropics. He’s considered by many to be the foremost nootropics expert in the field. He’s the author of Head First as well as the founder of the Nootropics Expert web site, a site devoted to optimizing your brain with nootropic supplements. He joins us today to talk about the power of nootropics from stacking to dosage, and much more. David’s journey began when he was diagnosed with adult ADD and put on Ritalin. It seemed to really help his ability to focus, until 2012 when he ended up in the ER. He had a laundry list of symptoms about 2 pages long and his doctors did extensive tests (including for Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, which came back negative). The only diagnosis he was given was hypothyroid. Determined to find a natural way to treat his attention issues along with his memory function, he went into full exploration mode of nootropics. He tried multiple combinations of supplements, various dosages and lifestyle changes until he found what works best for him. Today he has a specific stack he takes every day and also uses his years of extensive research and experimentation to help others through his books, podcasts, copywriting and personal consultations.

Origins of the word Nootropics
- There was a man named Dr. Cornelius E. Giurgea who was a psychologist and chemist. He was working with Pavlov back in St. Petersburg back in 1963 and he invented a thing called piracetam. Piracetam was technically the first nootropic.
- He invented piracetam to solve motion sickness. It turned out piracetam did not help motion sickness but it was a cognitive enhancer. It helped people's memory, so it was put out as a prescription drug. Since 1963 there have been many derivatives of piracetams called racetams.
Nootropics Misconceptions
- That you need a prescription to get nootropics.
- We consider nootropics as cocoa, caffeine, CBD oil, zinc, and vitamin D because they all influence the brain in one way or another.
Most Popular Topics
- People seem to be most interested in specific substances.
- I'm getting a lot of traffic to the Lion's Mane page.
- The best nootropics for anxiety is popular right now, probably because of COVID19.
- ADHD and ADD are also popular topics.
- Black Seed Oil is becoming popular.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness is more than a full mind, it's body fullness, a heart fullness and it helps us manage our emotions, or access the emotions.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is always with us, it's a gift. We're lucky to be able to have breathing with us at all times, but also to manage it when we need to.
- It's an anchor, it's like our home base.

Bullying Story
- Mindfulness is noticing in the moment when a self-judgment arises.
- When the inner critic or the inner bully decides to rear it's head into our stream of consciousness and our stream of thoughts, it's important to remind ourselves that the more we can build our mindfulness muscles, the more compassion we can discover within ourselves, and the less room there is for that inner critic to exist.

Effect on Emotions
- Being more mindful and more aware of my emotions and the impact it has on me and other people is the way in which I work with mindfulness and emotional intelligence. Sometimes I don't get it right.
Thoughts on Breathing
- If I stop breathing I stop living, so I feel that appropriate use of breath and concentration on breath is very useful in terms of mindfulness.
- If I have 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or 10 seconds, I think to myself, now is the time to focus on my breathing and I can have a mindful minute.

Bullying Story
- I had an experience around the concept of bullying. About 10 years ago I was doing some research with a colleague of mine who works with EI4Change, Doug Haynes. Doug and I were researching this concept of resilience.
- Everybody was talking about resilience, but what does it mean? We put together something called, Images of Resilience. Later, we set about designing and creating cards that supported the field of bullying.
- We covered confidence and assertiveness and rising to the challenge, with a knight fighting a dragon. Both of the cards have now been integrated into the coaching toolbox. This has resulted in wonderful, cathartic conversations around bullying in organizations, schools, and industry.

Most Influential Person
- My coach, Tommy Yankello.
Effect on Emotions
- Things upset me, but I recognize that and I do something about it. I have a lot of strategies to keep myself from ever reaching a point of where the anger is even remotely out of control.
- If I get too angry, my body's not used to the chemical changes that go on when you get angry. I hurt for about a day. My head hurts, I'm on edge, and I feel pain.
Thoughts on Breathing
- When you pay attention to your breathing, your body's going to force you to do it. You can't choke yourself out, right, or hold your breath into oblivion. Calmly use it to put your mind on something.
- You always have your breath and your heart beat, which is kinda related, and that's another automatic system you can put your mind on.

Bullying Story
- Abuse and picking on the little guy bothers me so much. The only time I ever got in trouble in the military, I watched an officer use his rank to kinda get in front of some people. That bugged me to no end. It took a lot of energy.
- I knew that was a battle that would end badly and would probably cost me.
- I hate when people are picked on who are not strong enough to defend themselves. It think it comes from being a competitor.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness balances my emotions out. I'm a very passionate person. Through mindfulness I became more optimistic and coming out of quite a depressed youth, mindfulness made me more optimistic.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I meditate every day and I teach people meditation so the first part of meditation is always breathing and especially from a Feng Shui perspective, breathing is connecting with the mountain energy.
- When we breath in we are focusing on the Prana or the Mountain Chi, so to focus on the highest vibration of air that is in the room and then when you breathe out, you let go of the most negative chi.

- I was already quite involved in my thinking and I loved mathematics and religion. I was not like the typical popular girl.
- The first thing I really got was that I had to stay mindful about these young women.
- It was a breakthrough for me, that when they wanted a tool to show something, I was the only one that had that tool. I would share it even if the girl had bullied me the week before.
