Importance of Humor in Your Life
- I love humor. Humor makes me feel alive and humor is a way of connecting. Humor is also very personal.
- What's humorous to me, may not be to you. I find that when I am most alive, my sense of humor just shows up.
- I never know when it's going to show up. I'm not a big joke teller. Just the joy of seeing that and not passing judgment on it but just noticing it.
- I love it when other people's sense of humor shows up and when mine shows up and then we can play on that stage.
Thoughts About Courage
- I think fear is stopping a lot of people from having mindful conversations. I'm afraid that if I show you who I really am, you're going to say get out of here. We're all vulnerable.
- I struggled for years and years and wrote about it in King Of Doubt, with what I called Imposter Syndrome. It was years before I had the courage to say, “I'm going to share, and put content out there, and I hope you like it, but if you don't, I'll survive.”
- I'd rather share who I am and have you say, you're just not my kind of guy. My experience is, when I share who I really am, I far more often connect and people do like me, than if I'm playing some sort of a game.
- But it takes a lot of courage to believe that and to put yourself out there.

Bullying Story
- I was not the subject of the bullying, but I got very close to it. In my coaching and consulting around Mindful Conversation, I worked in a lot of different companies and government agencies and I worked in a hospital for about a year.
- I remember one day in particular, the medical Chief of Staff came to me and he said, “I want you to work with this particular doctor. He is our best orthopaedic surgeon and we're having a terrible time with him.”
- Even patients don't want to see him. And nurses are refusing to work with him. I want you to help him.
- I met with him and I talked to him about why I thought this was important. All the coaching I did didn't have any impact at all. This guy was a horror in the operating room where you need to work really closely together. He considered himself the King of the operating room and he was a horrible bully.
- I was about to give up but I finally decided to set up a time when I would bring in some of the nurses and ask them to just tell what it was like to work with him. Most nurses did not want to do it, but I finally found four nurses who would come and talk with him. I set up some ground rules to make it as safe as possible. We had a really profound understanding because I really encouraged everybody, don't respond, I just want you to listen. Then I want you to repeat back what you heard. You can totally disagree with it.
- The meeting lasted about an hour and a half. At the end of the meeting I dismissed the nurses and I turned to him and I said, “What do you think?”
- He broke down in tears. He said, “I don't want to be that kind of man. Help me to change.”
- I was so moved by that. This was a bully to the nth degree. That was his persona. Because these four nurses had the courage to be vulnerable and to say, “this is my experience when I'm around you”, it changed that doctor's life.

- I don't believe we can have a deliberate hand in anything unless we are present. Mindfulness is a gateway to that presence and it allows us to have dominion over ourselves on all levels including our emotions.

- The breath allows us to center and allows us to ground and allows us to change the part of the brain we are operating in and to get to a really clean space to be able to move forward in a direction that we consciously we chose.

Bullying Story
- This man is the only person I ever bullied to be in my program. We were friends and I had it in me that this guy was really going to be served by my program. Generally speaking, I don't have sales conversations with people, I have opportunity conversations with people to share what the opportunity is and to understand if I want them to be part of my community or not. I just knew that this guy was going to add to our community. He finally said yes. For about a year he kind of bimbled. Then after while he said, I really want to take this seriously. He decided to upgrade it to the higher level of my program. Within three months he was making ten to twenty-five thousand dollars a week. Initially he was trying to use his music as the source of his abundance. He had a very traumatic experience around 2008.

Effect on Emotions
- When I do not meditate for a week, I can feel it. Even simple breathing exercises when I wake up and when I go to bed, just simple box breathing. Four seconds inhale, four seconds exhale and so on, it makes a very big difference.
- When you're getting angry in a meeting or something like that, then something in your brain tells you, just breathe. Then you start breathing and you control your parasympathetic system and things start going better.

- I do box breathing exercises every morning right after waking up and every night before going to sleep (the box breathing exercises I included in MindFlow for beginners and experts)

Bullying Story
- I was bullied. It was one of my bosses in the past. It was one of the first jobs in the United States. When I started to work there I was really happy and then things started to look really odd.
- Business-wise, this guy was successful, but he was saying things that were really weird. He was bragging about listening to people's opinions just because then he could convince them how wrong they were.
- At the beginning I thought it was just a joke or a salesy type of speaking. Then at some point I realized that people were coming out of the meetings with him shaking. It was not just me. Then I started to get more worried. I started to realize that the guy couldn't accept anybody else's opinion.
- I began to wonder if it was normal that there would be a dog at work running between my legs and barking, even while I was on the phone with a client. The guy had a dog and it was fetching while everybody else was working.
- This was the first office I'd seen in the United States so I wasn't sure what to expect. I asked other people and they said it was out of line.

- I didn't always know how I was feeling. The word I used was, I don't like it. I feel bad. Mindfulness has made me take a step back and ask, what is feeling bad?

- I worked in schools in Baltimore and schools around the country. What I realized was that being with kids in various socio-economic levels, regardless of public or private, the better schools were never based on funding, on the type of technology they had.
- It seemed to be based on two factors. 1/ Parent involvement 2/ Systemic support. The Principals, Guidance Counselors, and teachers can only do so much.
- If the system supported the school, the schools seemed to thrive, even if they didn't have a lot of money.

- I went to this upper middle class high school and there were all these athletes with brand named clothing. They tried to make others feel they were less.
- I remember my reaction to it at the time. If they sent an insult to me, I would send an insult immediately back to them and try to hold my ground.
- It worked for the time-being. I guess the harsh realities of high school show you the harsh realities of the corporate world in a more raw way.

Bullying Story
- As a young kid I was definitely bullied and I really relate to your story about voice because I grew up in a house where it wasn't safe to express your emotions. I was a shy child and very early on I didn't trust myself. That sense of trust in myself was easily disrupted.
- I was in a youth choir to please my parents and my youth choir instructor used to make me mouth the words. My voice was strong but not always up to her standards.
- I didn't tell my parents because I didn't know I didn't have to do choir. I didn't know that I was worth defending or that my feelings and my desires were important.
- I think that one of the most important things you can get out of mindfulness is self-love and self-compassion and knowing that you matter.
- I realize how I really created this situation of being bullied or stifled to get to where I am right now.

- Mindfulness has helped me mitigate my negative sides and reinforce and access as a resource, my more positive sides. By helping me be mindful with my emotions, I can go, Oh, I'm having a reactive part and I'm having an empathic, loving presence part.
- If you're familiar with the story of The Two Wolves; we ask the question, which wolf do I feed? Let's feed the emotional, empathic parts. Not that the other part isn't real and legit. What do I give a voice to?
Thoughts on Breathing
- Mindfulness and breathing are intimately connected for me. My breath is my go-to, ground point. I always say, when you are mindful under stress, you have to practice when you're not. It's so simple, so easy, so uncomplicated to connect breathing and mindfulness.
- When I find myself getting into an argument, getting angry or upset, the very first thing is, I go to my breath. So simple, just take a pause and inject a space into a ‘too-fast conversation'.

- I was bullied pretty badly. I could pray for mindfulness on the part of any of the bullies, that's for sure.
- When I put myself back in the moment, I wasn't feeling very mindful about the things that were going on.
- I felt very victimized and I didn't have a lot of compassion for people. I feel like I was really missing a mentor to help me reframe things.

Effect on Emotions
- Emotional Intelligence is something that I'm big on. To me it's one of those things in our broken school system that needs to be taught more.
- It's important to be aware of your own emotions and to be able to respond appropriately to the emotions of others.
- I'm always working on anger and temper. Other people are not out to get you or hurt you. Everybody has their own stuff going on.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is huge. That's something I'm working on doing more of. I'm not a meditator. After I do my mantra in the shower, I take a few deep breaths and let it all soak in.
- If I'm having a moment, or if something's going on, and I start to get overwhelmed or anxious, I'll catch myself and just do some breathing exercises.

Bullying Story
- I was very bullied as a kid. When I transferred from Hawaii to Bethesda, Maryland, I had an accent and I spoke with Hawaiian slang called pigeon.
- I was an outsider and I never quite got my footing.
- My mom was not the typical soccer mom. I just wanted to fit in and be like the other kids.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness and my emotions now are my navigation system. I pay attention to what my emotions tell me about myself and what I'm experiencing and my levels of energy.
- Emotions used to be something that were very scary. They included depression and scary mindsets, and now my emotions are definitely there as my guiding system to get me to where I need to go.
Thoughts on Breathing
- We overuse our minds so much so just using the power of breath to bring yourself back in your body [is powerful].
- You can feel both your body and your mind working together and not just have this overworking, overthinking mind where you're not even paying attention to the fact that you have a human body.

Bullying Story
- I have been called everything; a witch, snake oil saleman, crazy, you can't do this. I made a video called, Those Who Love Me, Those Who Help Me, and Those Who Hate Me.
- I wrote all the negative things people have said about me on a white board behind me and I stood up and spoke. Before I started this six years ago, I didn't have any social media, I had never spoken on camera, I didn't even have a facebook account.
- G. I. Gerjieff said, “Ask a man to give up any vice and he will do so easily, but ask him to give up his suffering and then you've got yourself a dilemma.”
- A lot of people do not want to believe that they are at the core of their own suffering. Reality Transurfing really does adopt this idea that there are no victims, that we have to take accountability for who we are in our actions and our thoughts.
