Mindfulness In The Motherhood Journey: Patty Castellanos
Wednesday Jan 26, 2022
Wednesday Jan 26, 2022
Patty Castellanos is a Cuban-American born mother, living in Miami. She is a dedicated, strong-willed, compassionate and passionate wife and mother of 2 amazing kids. Patty knows what it is like to want to support your career and family, manage a home and business, while carving out time for self-care and scheduling a night out. In 2011, Patty had her first child by Cesarean Section birth, which changed her outlook on birth and motherhood. Her life changed and this became the reason for the launch of her private practice, The Expression Center. In 2015, her little family was completed with her daughter, who was born via VBAC; Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. This was a powerful journey of healing, learning and growth. Patty's family is her passion, not a 9-5 job. She works with mothers every day, who choose to put their motherhood journey and healing as their priority, because being a happy and healthy mom is a priority. Patty uses traditional therapeutic tools and techniques combined with the power of the subconscious mind to create change through hypnosis.

Effect on Emotions
- As a mom, and as a supporter, and therapist to moms, it's so easy for moms to lose their cool, to explode, to completely lose track of the moment. So as a mom, I work to always practice what I teach.
- As a woman, I also work to consistently allow myself to focus on the here and now. Because it really is like a cycle. When we are able to focus on mindfulness and be in the here and now.
- Our kids see it. When our kids see it, they then are able to give us a better communication, understanding. And they are better at what they're doing as well.
- Relationships are stronger, families are stronger, and really all comes together to focusing on mindfulness, the present moment, and here and now.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Oh, my gosh, breathing is everything. In fact, I just got a text yesterday, from one of my clients that texted me saying, I'm sorry, I've been missing in action. I had my baby on November 2, no epidural, all natural, and my husband was a trooper. And the one thing that was the biggest help, was breathing.
- The Hypno birthing breathing really worked. It's amazing, because all of the breathing techniques that I teach my clients are breathing techniques that they could use for a lifetime. So I teach calm, breathing, calm breathing, to really focus your intentions, return to the here and now.
- Allow yourself to even throw a quick affirmation out there, to really bring yourself back to what you need to do in the moment.
- Then for those that are pregnant and preparing for labor delivery, I also teach them breathing, and birth breathing. And it's amazing, the way that the breath can really allow you to connect your mind and your body so that your body can work most effectively.

Bullying Story
- Any pressure around conceiving a child is completely multifaceted because every woman is a unique individual although not every woman has that dream of conceiving a child.
- Recently I had a client that never ever thought that she wanted to have a child, but then she got married and her husband wanted a child.
- After a few years, she conceded and she told her husband, “I am going to give you a child.”

Why Be An Optimist?
Sunday Jan 23, 2022
Sunday Jan 23, 2022
Why Be An Optimist is the question I ask of you today. Have you ever thought about this question? I believe there are many reasons to be an optimist, although I think many individuals may not feel they have a choice. In my opinion, you do have a choice as to whether you are seen as an optimist or a pessimist. This depends on you. Mindfulness can help you think differently and it can help you be seen differently by others. Today I am sharing 5 reasons why you will become more of an optimist as you grow your mindfulness practice.

A Quote
A Pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity;
An Optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.
– Sir Winston Churchill
Nov 30 1874 – Jan 24, 1965
What are your thoughts about the above quote? Do you think that an optimist does indeed see opportunities in EVERY difficulty?
Here are 5 reasons why I believe you will become more of an optimist as you grow your mindfulness practice.
Life Is Valuable
Living in the moment helps you realize that life is worth living. Once you discover that you can be content and grounded in this very moment, you realize that life can give you pleasure if you allow yourself to welcome mindfulness into your life.
Positive Thoughts Feel Good
Mindfulness helps you identify what you are thinking – once you do, you realize that positive thoughts feel good.
Gratitude Pumps Me Up
Gratitude is part of mindfulness and gratitude helps me feel positive, happy, and optimistic. After a one-hour run while doing self-hypnosis, I feel energized and eager to face the world.
Optimists Attract Optimists
Optimistic people don’t usually want to be around pessimistic people. Optimists seek out each other and as a result they prosper and find ways to thrive.
Be Happy Now
Mindfulness teaches us to Be Happy Now. Being happy is comfortable, cozy, relaxing, less stress than other mindsets, and just plain feels good.
What does mindfulness add to your life? I'd be interested to hear from you. Send me an email at, bruce@mindfulnessmode.com and let me know your thoughts. Also, if you have a topic you'd like me to cover on my Sunday episodes, I'd love to hear that too. Thanks so much for joining me.

Living With Yourself
Sunday Jan 16, 2022
Sunday Jan 16, 2022
Living with yourself is the topic I've decided to cover today. We often have a dialogue with ourselves that looks like a back and forth conversation. I often talk about the inner bully, and how some of that chatter that's going on is not very positive or encouraging. Sometimes we say mean and nasty things to ourselves that we would never say to another person. So we really have to be careful of how we converse with ourselves in our own minds.

Awareness
As soon as you become aware of how you're living with yourself and what your inner chatter is saying to you, then you can do something about it. You have to identify it first, and clearly listen to the words you are saying. Living With Yourself is a TV show on Netflix featuring actor, Paul Rudd. At first, I didn't think of this show in the context of mindfulness and the inner bully, but the more I thought about it I realized it was related. The main character in this show has two sides. One side is upbeat and positive and things in his life are going well. He succeeds at his job and he's seen as a winner, even by himself. He also has an opposite side that is not doing so well. He's struggling and having challenges on a regular basis.
One of Those Days?
Are you like me? Are there some days when things just seem to fall into place, and you feel terrific about life? On those ‘sunny days', you have an amazingly positive outlook and you just feel terrific. Then there are other days where the opposite is true. The TV show, Living With Yourself, lays this out for you. We all are living with ourselves and it's up to us to figure out how to live in such a way that that we feel good about it and enjoy our journey.
More Great Days
Mindfulness can help us have more of the great days. We learn to be aware of our thoughts and to live in the moment. Of course, we think about the future, we make plans but it's also important to live in the moment and be happy now. We can chose to be happy with our lives at the present moment. This TV show reminded me of specific ways we can live life with a winning mindset.
Dress For The Day
The pandemic can leave me feeling like I'm in a rut sometimes. Maybe some days I might not get dressed up as much as usual or maybe not shave and do what I can to look my best. My suggestion is to do what you can to feel better, and if that means not wearing sweatpants as much and fixing up your hair or dressing up in some nicer clothes, then make the effort to do that. Your family will likely notice and you will feel more like a winner. Maybe you are working but in spite of that, keep habits in place that make you feel good.
Get Up At A Set Time
I suggest you get up at a planned time, and stick to routines that really work for you. Your routines can help you to feel like things are going well and and you're getting tasks accomplished. If you get up in the morning and take action, working on your list of jobs that correspond to your goals, then you'll feel like you are moving forward and I you will feel better as a result.
Exercise
Make sure that exercise is built into your schedule, one way or another. We are fed by our endorphins; those endorphins that are created when we move and when we get exercise, whether that's going for a brisk walk, a swim, a run, or another activity. Whatever it takes for you to move your body will definitely result in helping you feel better and be more healthy. Once you become more active, take note of how good you feel.
Feed Your Brain
Set aside some time to read or to listen to podcasts or to meditate. I meditate every day and this practice has improved my life as it has for many of my guests and listeners too. Make sure that you are delivering for you, as well as for other people in your life. Sometimes we spend a lot of time serving others, working at our job, and taking care of our families. Also make an effort to set aside time for you.
Listen To Your Needs
Listen to your body, because your body will let you know if something is out of whack. The more you can listen to your body and notice what's happening with it, the better your life will become. Notice the messages that you are receiving, no matter how busy you are. If your life is on super-speed and you're going all the time, busy and constantly on the go, you might not notice what your body is telling you. Are you living a frantic life? That's an important question to consider.Meditation is one tool that can help you become more aware of your needs.
Living With Yourself
If you feel like checking out the TV show, Living With Yourself, you might find it interesting and entertaining. For me, the concept is very interesting, and I found the show quite fascinating.

Wow, What A Ride
Sunday Jan 09, 2022
Sunday Jan 09, 2022
Wow, What A Ride is the name of this episode. Let me tell you what inspired me to share this topic with you today. My wife sent me a quote, “life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of riding safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud ‘o smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, wow, what a ride.” This quote is by Hunter S. Thompson. I thought what an interesting concept to think about. After all, mindfulness is often thinking about healthy eating and just being happy and healthy and living that kind of life. Do you sometimes think it's risky to be too careful? Maybe being too careful will cause us to miss out on life. This quote says hey, live your life, enjoy your life. I decided to look up Hunter S. Thompson and find out more about him.
Listen & Subscribe on:
iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify
Who Is Hunter?
Hunter Stockton Thompson founded a movement in journalism called the gonzo journalism movement. He rose to prominence with the publication of a book called ‘Hells Angels'. This is a book that he spent almost two years living and riding with the Hells Angels motorcycle gang in order to write this firsthand account of their lives and what it was like being a Hells Angel member. Thompson was born in 1937, in Kentucky and he died in 2005. My research said, in one of the articles; Hunter had a briefcase of drugs and a supreme command of language. And as he defined his legacy at Rolling Stone, he changed journalism in the process. So yes, Hunter became a journalist at Rolling Stone magazine, and really made an impact there as a journalist.
What do you think? What are your thoughts? Do you think it's really important to do what he suggests in this in this quote? “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud o' smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, wow, what a ride!”
Take Chances
There are five ideas that came to me as a result of the above quote. The first one is, take chances. I think it's really important not to be too careful all the time; not be too worried about taking risks. Don't be so concerned that something negative might happen. I really think it's important in life to take chances, I mean, that's my philosophy. I have known people with the opposite philosophy. People who are extremely careful and never want to take chances. That's not my philosophy. I really like the idea of taking chances; the idea of doing things that maybe a lot of other people would not choose to do. I think taking chances makes life fun; makes it interesting. It gives life, an aspect of excitement. And it's just the way I want to live life.
Be Creative
The second thing, I believe, is use your creativity. And I think that a lot of people in adulthood, get kind of cornered in their career, where they really are not using very much creativity. I've interviewed a lot of people that got stuck in a job of some kind and they kind of woke up one day and thought, What am I doing? I'm not, grabbing life by the horns. I'm not really digging in and enjoying my life the way I should be. And then they turned around and discovered that through creativity, they could discover something about themselves. They could discover something about the world that just changed their perspective. And I can think of a number of guests on my show who fit this description. Tommy Breedlove is one of them. I absolutely loved having him on the show. It was episode 554. Tommy is one of those people that has that a huge creative side. And he introduced me to some other people that I've had on the show that were really creative as well. So whether it's getting into music, like my episode that I just just had with Jack Stafford if you'd missed that episode (725)m I'd encourage you to go back and check it out. You can check out jack Stafford at podsongs.com.
There are a lot of different ways to be creative. I believe using your creativity is a way to give yourself a breathtaking life like Hunter Thompson talked about.
Push Yourself
Push yourself into the world. Do you make it a point to go out and speak to people and to connect with people? Like I was saying Tony Breedlove is a connector and has a vibrant life as as result of that philosophy. Do you want to just disappear into the background when there's a lot of people around? Even if you're an introvert, you may notice that sometimes you sort of push yourself and you get to meet people. That's how a lot of the most interesting things happened in my life. They happened because I took that extra initiative and pushed myself outside of my comfort zone.
Whether you're an introvert or an extrovert, it doesn't matter. It's important to push yourself into the world, make connections, talk to people, ask questions, tell stories, you know, be willing to push yourself that way. And that can lead to things that you'd never imagine like friendships, jobs, relationships, and more.
Today is my my aunt Peg's birthday. What an amazing, wonderful woman she was. She was so vibrant and upbeat and she had the most beautiful laugh. She would laugh this beautiful, heartfelt, hearty laugh and smile at you and, and there'd be a twinkle in her eye. She was a very beautiful soul. And so today, I've been thinking about her a lot, because she was somebody I really related to. I believe she pushed herself in the world to inspire others.
Listen To Your Emotions
It is so important to be aware of and pay attention to your emotions. What are they telling you? Is it about fear? Is it about joy? What are your emotions telling you? Live life with gusto, like Hunter Thomas described in his quote. Much of that is about listening to your emotions. If you have fear, identify the fear. Admit that you're really scared and then decide whether to move forward. Being aware of your emotions will help you exponentially in your life.
Be Grateful
Being grateful is a way to win in this world. If you're a person that has that kind of gusto, with a twinkle in your eye like my Aunt Peg, you'll be a winner. Do you have that hunger for excitement and an interest in meeting people and doing new things? I believe that being grateful is a big part of becoming that kind of person. It can help you to to embrace life, to live life with gusto and to feel, when you get to latter part of your life that you really have nailed life and embraced it. I'm not saying I agree with everything Hunter Thompson did, but he certainly lived life with gusto.
Take what we've learned today to reach new heights calm focus and happiness. Stay in the mode

Fulfilment For Your Life
Sunday Jan 02, 2022
Sunday Jan 02, 2022
The word, fulfillment is a word I'd like to discuss. What does it mean to you? I've had a word of the year, many times, and I found it to be a helpful practice. I can use my word of the year to be inspired every day, in one way or another. Let's talk about having a word of the year. Do you think having a word of the year is a valuable exercise? Before we talk about the word of the year, I want to share with you a quote for the year that I thought was meaningful. I put it up on TikTok to share with the world.
Listen & Subscribe on:
iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify
A Quote
Here's the quote, “be the one who is so busy loving your life, that you have no time for hate, regret, or fear.” I think there's a lot to that quote that's valuable; be the one who is so busy loving your life. And that's related to loving yourself, of course, because if you have a dislike for yourself, if you have a hate-on for yourself, you're probably going to have a hate-on for your life. And so I think it's one in the same. So again, be so busy loving yourself, or be so busy loving your life. I think those two thoughts are very similar.
The next part of the quote is that you will have no time for hate, regret, or fear. Those are all very different things but they are all rooted from fear. Fear is one of those emotions that other emotions come from, including hate, anger, and regret. It's important to embrace fear and just say to yourself, hey, I'm just going to let that fear happen. I'm going to examine it, I'm going to notice it, I'm going to pay attention to it. And I think for me, many times in my life, I tried to not pay attention to it. I tried to push it down, I tried to get busy, so I wouldn't be thinking about it or think about something else.
What Is Fear?
Fear is something that, if you welcome it, if you are open to it, if you allow it to be, then it won't seem like such a big deal. But that's why I think this quote is really great. “Be the one who is so busy loving your life, that you have no time for hate, regret or fear”. And that quote is by Karen Salmonsohn. And I didn't know this author before I found the quote but I looked her up and noticed she's the author of this book, which I think I'd really enjoy reading, called “Happy Habits: 50 Science Backed Rituals To Adopt (or stop) To Boost Health and Happiness. Keep practicing mindfulness and you will learn more and more about the definition of fear
Your Word?
How can I release a habit that is not serving me any longer? The answer to this question will reveal a very important way to get ahead. This is something a lot of people think of, at the beginning of the year of the year. I haven't read Karen Salmonsohn's book, but I think probably the book is excellent. But back to Word of the Year. So my word of the year is fulfillment, what is yours? What does fulfillment really mean to you? Well, I think to me, as a mindfulness guy, I think you can choose to be fulfilled, I think fulfillment is a choice. A lot of people do not feel fulfilled in their lives. And that causes them a lot of pain, a lot of angst, a lot of anxiety. And they go day after day feeling as though they have missed the boat. Feeling thoughts like, I'm not achieving enough, I'm not enough. And that is what I have experienced with my clients. A lot of times their anxiety boils down to is this belief that they are not enough, they don't make enough money, or they haven't made enough impact on the world, or maybe haven't authored enough books.
You Are ______.
You know what? You are enough. I think that's what mindfulness teaches us. It teaches us to be happy at this very moment. And I think that's why fulfillment is such a great word because you can choose to be fulfilled. Now, it may not be easy to just suddenly decide, I'm fulfilled. The fact is, if you decide that you are going to be satisfied in your life at this very moment, it will give you peace, it will give you a sense of being grounded, so that you can move forward.
Mindfulness certainly does mean to be happy in the moment. Mindfulness also means you can achieve incredible things in your life. It doesn't mean don't look to the future, it doesn't mean don't make goals. You can definitely set goals and have all sorts of plans for your life. But you can also be happy in the moment. So the definition of fulfillment is, “the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted.
It's important to to think logically about how to be happy in life. How can you feel fulfilled? What do you need to do to feel fulfilled? So fulfillment is my word for 2022.
Why choose a word? Why is it important to choose a word for the year? Hear my thoughts by tuning into the episode.

Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has helped me be less volatile and to be able to sit with discomfort whether it's with my family or kids or doing this work. Mindfulness has helped me with impermanence, knowing that it's always going to pass and so how do we get through those moments of discomfort with equanimity and composure and integrity.
Thoughts on Breathing
- I breathe every morning. In fact, I took time this morning, an hour before we recorded this. Breathing is central. I always remind myself if I'm in a tense situation or if I'm anxious to speak or facilitate a group of less than welcoming people, then I breathe.
- It always brings me back to centering where I can do my best work.

Bullying Story
- My discomfort and the fact that I get criticized and attacked and that people question my motives, my character, my ability; all that I have to absorb. It doesn't mean it doesn't hurt or that I don't have feelings or that I don't get triggered. All of that happens, but because of mindfulness we absorb that, we sit with it so that we can respond instead of react.
- I will say to people, that is nothing, anything that I will receive is nothing compared to what black people and other people of color, experience every day of their lives.

A Holiday Wish
Sunday Dec 26, 2021
Sunday Dec 26, 2021
I just really wish you the very best, Mindful Tribe. I wish that you feel this amazing feeling in your life of calm focus, and happiness. And that's because way back in 2015, when I started the Mindfulness Mode Podcast, one of my goals was that through mindfulness, I would be able to help you, my listener, learn how to experience calm, focus, and happiness. And that's why I chose that as my tagline; reach new heights of calm focus and happiness.
I've been learning the subtle details of mindfulness along with you, Mindful Tribe. I've been learning from all my fantastic guests, and I've learned that it's important to understand about our emotions. That we have to live with our emotions, and to welcome and open to our emotions. That's pretty much where it all starts. Understanding that when we suppress our emotions, that's not a good thing. It's not healthy to suppress your emotions, push them away, do things so that we can just ignore them pretend they're not there. That's certainly something I've done a lot in my life. I've learned from my guests that many people push away their emotions.

A Book
Being grateful is an important part of my life. Is this important to you, Mindful Tribe? It's great when you can truly allow yourself to appreciate whatever is in your life. a book called, ‘Letting Go; The Pathway of Surrender', by David R. Hawkins. What a great book. A number of guests on my show have recommended David Hawkins. This is only one of the books in the series, and I'm absolutely enjoying it.
One of my favorite books, which has to do with letting go is called ‘The Surrender Experiment', by Michael A Singer. Quite a few of my guests have suggested this book as well. This book is written like a novel and each chapter ends with a cliffhanger and it's very much an easy-read. It's about the how the author makes a decision early in his life, to simply let go; he makes this decision that he's going to lead his life by letting go and letting things unfold naturally, and basically to say yes, to whatever presents itself. And he decides to meditate a lot and have meditation as a central part of his life and use meditation as a way that he will deal with most aspects of his life. And it's really fascinating how things turn out. So if you haven't read this, I would recommend it.
A Wish
My holiday wish for you is that you are able to notice and embrace your emotions, whatever they are. Some of our emotions, of course, can be very painful. The emotions of fear, anger, and bereavement, you know, if you've lost a loved one in your life, I truly feel for you. It's really important to embrace these emotions. Also, besides learning to embrace the emotions, my holiday wish for you is that you would be able to genuinely ask yourself, these three questions. And the three questions can make a massive difference in your life as to how you process your emotions, and whether you actually do process your emotions.
Hold a Pen
Before I tell you what the three questions are, I just want to say that, one of the things I've learned is that the most effective and most life changing things that I've learned in my life have been the simplest. As humans, we tend to over complicate things, we tend to think that for something to be effective, and really worthwhile. It has to be something that either costs a lot of money or takes a lot of time to learn, or is just very difficult to comprehend it. Well, actually, I think in some ways, the opposite is true. Sometimes some of these things are very, very simple. And the person who teaches this process of focusing on these three questions, suggests you pick up a pen and hold it. He says, just hold the pen loosely. Then he says okay, release it and drop it.
Easier Than You Think
That's how easy it actually is to let go of your emotion that's holding you back. Simply let go of what's bothering you. This method is taken from the Sedona Method, and that's at sedona.com. This is something that I learned from Hale Dwoskin, the man who teaches the Sedona Method. I interviewed Hale Dwoskin back in July of 2020. The episode was # 570. So you can go to MindfulnessMode.com/570, and you can hear Hale on that episode. He is a New York Times bestselling author of ‘The Sedona Method', and he's featured in a movie called Letting Go. You'll learn more about him if you listen to that episode. This method called The Sedona Method was invented first by Lester Levinson and he wrote a book called, Happiness is Free and It's Easier Than You Think. This is a five book series. The teachings boil down to three questions.
What Bothers You?
Think to yourself, is there a situation in your life that really irritates you, that really bothers you. Do you realize that you're thinking about this a lot? Maybe there's a person in your life, that that really rubs you the wrong way? Or maybe someone at work irritates you? Maybe you think about this person a lot and you wish that they weren't in your life. Start with this focus of, what is this thing that is bothering you? Listen to the episode to hear the three questions.
Finding Peace
So I encourage you to just consider these three questions. And in my opinion, that's a holiday gift is to help you understand that peace, for all of us can lie in the answers to these three questions. Calm focus, and happiness can be achieved by answering these three questions. Calm focus and happiness can also be achieved in other ways, too. I mean, there are a number of ways you can find peace in your life.
Self-hypnosis is one of the tools that has really worked for me and made a big difference. The thing about hypnosis is that it works for nearly every issue. Hypnosis is incredible. I am so fortunate to be a trained hypnotist so I can help other people. But I can help myself, I can do self hypnosis, and understand that hypnosis works for almost anything that is holding you back or causing you angst, whether you're not sleeping well. Whether you have a lot of fear, you have a bad habit that you just really want to release, you want to let go of it? Well, Self Hypnosis will help you do that. And maybe it's trauma or pain or motivation, you know, you just can't get motivated for something. Well, hypnosis can help.
27 Ways?
My hypnosis teacher Erica Flint taught me that hypnosis can help with almost every issue (Erica on Mindfulness Mode). Maybe you've tried 27 ways to quit smoking, and then the 28th way was hypnosis, and that worked for you. Well, hypnosis works for many people, including me. When so many other things didn't work, no matter what you've tried already, hypnosis can be the answer you're looking for. So I have been very grateful to have worked with quite a few different clients throughout 2021 and we've met with success.
