Music For Meditation; Kevin Roth
Thursday Aug 10, 2023
Thursday Aug 10, 2023
Kevin Roth began to play the dulcimer in 1972 at the age of thirteen and is now known for his dulcimer music for meditation. Back at age sixteen, he recorded his first album which immediately launched him into international fame. Between 1974 and 1984, Roth recorded ten albums, establishing himself as a prominent folk singer and dulcimer player. In 1984, Roth performed the theme to the PBS-TV children’s show Shining Time Station. That project brought him to another new and much larger market. His friendship and collaboration in 2006 with Noel Paul Stookey, of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, further cemented Roth in American folk history. His career took him to concert and symphony stages around the world, to festivals, radio, television shows, and two appearances at the White House.
Roth now guides individuals and groups in discovering what truly matters to them, how to accomplish their goals, and how handling stress is an essential factor in a healthy life.

Effect on Emotions
- Kevin Roth talked about emotions and mindfulness. He mentioned how normal feelings like anger and frustration come up for everyone, but he doesn't let them control him. He compares these feelings to bubbles that pop quickly. He believes that these feelings aren't real and that he doesn't need to get stuck in them.
- Kevin explained that when people believe their thoughts, they can suffer, even in simple situations like waiting in line for coffee. He gave an example of someone cutting in line. He pointed out that maybe they're just waiting for coffee and not intentionally trying to skip the line. Mindfulness, according to Kevin, is recognizing that these thoughts come and go, and we don't have to give them too much importance. Thoughts might be there one moment and gone the next.
- He shared a story about a person who disliked her boss and had to talk to her on the computer for a short time every Monday. Kevin helped her realize that she only spent a small part of her workweek dealing with her boss, but she was carrying negative feelings about her all the time.
- Kevin found it surprising how we do these things without even realizing it. He believes that mindfulness can help us become aware of our thoughts and emotions and not let them control our feelings and actions.
Thoughts on Breathing
- My advice is to just keep breathing; just keep doing it. I don't do any breathwork because I don't personally need it.

Bullying Story
- Kevin Roth didn't personally experience bullying, but he knows about a program created to counter bullying by his friend Peter Yaro. The program is called Operation Respect, and it's for schools all around the world.
- Peter Paul Mary, a famous folk music group, recorded a song for Operation Respect called “Don't Laugh at Me.”
- Kevin performed in a concert with Peter Yaro to support this anti-bullying initiative. Although Kevin doesn't have a bullying story, he's aware of the importance of this program and how Peter Yaro is still actively involved in it. If you want to learn more, you can search for Peter Yaro and Operation Respect.
Words of Wisdom
- Be happy. You can be happy. You have to choose it.

Mindfulness; 3 Core Elements
Monday Aug 07, 2023
Monday Aug 07, 2023
Three core elements of mindfulness is the topic of today's episode. At its simplest level, to be mindful is to pay attention on purpose. To be aware, to breathe, to be still, and to observe. Mindfulness is also to experience what is happening in this very moment in time. Mindfulness is to accept without judgment the thoughts and emotions you experience.
Listen & Subscribe on:
iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify
1/ Being Present
Mindfulness is about being fully present and aware of what's happening right now. It's like focusing on the present moment on purpose. By doing this, you can learn more about yourself, your thoughts, and your biases. Instead of dwelling on the past or constantly thinking about the future, mindfulness helps us stay in the “now.”
When you practice mindfulness, you pay attention to what you're doing or feeling at the moment. This can be as simple as focusing on your breathing. For example, you can say to yourself, “I am breathing in, I am breathing out” as you take slow breaths. By doing this, you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings without getting lost in worries or regrets.
Mindfulness can help reduce stress and negative emotions like anxiety and sadness. It's like taking a break from our usual worries and being more present with ourselves and the world around us. You can practice mindfulness through meditation, yoga, or even by doing one thing at a time and giving it your full attention.
For instance, right now, I'm writing this without any distractions, like meetings or emails. It's a simple idea, but it can make a big difference in how we feel and understand ourselves. So, focus on the present moment and give it your energy and attention because it's the only moment that truly matters.
2/ Acceptance
Mindfulness means accepting things as they are and being open to whatever may come. It's not just about focusing on the present moment; there's also an attitude that goes along with it. This attitude is described as being open, accepting, and curious.
To practice mindfulness, people learn to sit quietly and pay attention to what's happening inside them at any given moment. The goal is to let thoughts and emotions flow naturally without trying to control or judge everything that happens. This can be hard for beginners and even experienced practitioners can find it challenging to stay accepting and open for long periods.
In our culture, we're often taught that some thoughts and emotions are better than others, and we should try to stop our thoughts or change our emotions. But mindfulness encourages acceptance and openness, which can lead to a sense of stillness. Just being still and observing without trying to change anything might feel strange or uncomfortable, but that's the idea – to simply “be” in the moment.
When we're still, thoughts and emotions come and go quickly or slowly, and they can change without us trying to make them change. Becoming aware of these patterns inside us and being curious about them is an important first step in practicing mindfulness.
In addition to being present and having the right attitude, there are three more elements of mindfulness that we'll be discussing in this book. These elements help capture the true spirit and essence of mindfulness, and they're important for applying mindfulness in sports and other areas of life.
3/ Being Non-Judgmental
Mindfulness includes an important aspect called “Nonjudging,” which means not judging or labeling our thoughts and emotions. In many cognitive behavioral techniques, there is a tendency to judge and label our thoughts and feelings, but mindfulness encourages us to take a different approach.
Imagine you're sitting by a river, and your thoughts and emotions are like things floating down the river. Instead of getting caught up in each thought or emotion, you can observe them from a distance. This helps us realize that not all our thoughts are rational, and some emotions aren't connected to what's happening right now. We don't have to believe everything our mind tells us.
For example, if athletes often feel anxious about their performance, they might label themselves as “chokers” or “head cases.” Mindfulness can teach them to see that anxiety comes and goes, and it doesn't define who they are. It's the same with feelings like grief or depression; they are part of our experience but don't define us.
Having a nonjudgmental attitude allows us to accept the present moment as it is, without categorizing everything as good or bad. It gives us the space to linger in the present and fully experience it without constantly judging and evaluating everything.
In mindfulness, the first step is getting to the present moment, but the nonjudging attitude is what allows us to accept and appreciate it fully. By observing our thoughts and emotions from a safe distance, we can better understand our internal patterns and have a more meaningful experience in the present moment.

Most Influential Person
- My mother, who passed away a year and a half ago at the age of 92
Effect on Emotions
- Regarding emotions, for me, mindfulness creates self-awareness. I mean, you're looking at somebody who can be a class a jerk from time to time.
And so I am mindful of how my quick words or snotty snide remarks might affect someone. That can hold me back.
Thoughts on Breathing
- On the topic of breathing, In the book, I quote the work of Dr. Sharon Melnick, Ph.D. She's a clinical psychologist on the topic of resilience.
- Dr. Melnick talks about breathing techniques, as does Donald Altman, whom I also quote. So breathing from the diaphragm is important.
But when you are speaking, do what opera singers do; breathe from your diaphragm, so you're more filled with air.
When we do this deep breathing thing, we are becoming more physically centered, and I like to think that we're also emotionally centered that way too, Bruce.

Bullying Story
- John Baldoni shared his experiences with bullying, both as a child and in the workplace.
- He talked about the harmful impact of a “Bully Boss” who denigrates others and lacks empathy.
- Mindfulness, he believes, is essential in coaching to create self-awareness and encourage personal growth. While it might not work with sociopaths, helping others adopt a different perspective can address bullying behavior.
- Being mindful allows us to recognize our imperfections and strive to improve for a better future.
Words of Wisdom
- Look for the good in others. Try to look for virtues.

Cooking and Mindfulness
Monday Jul 31, 2023
Monday Jul 31, 2023
Cooking and Mindfulness is the topic of today’s episode. Cooking can give you focus and groundedness, as well as a feeling of choice. You can choose whatever healthy ingredients you want to use, and you can avoid unhealthy ingredients. You can choose how you feel about cooking and decide to use it as an activity you feel good about.
Choice
Like I said, you have freedom and choice when you are cooking. At least that's how I look at it. You can cook a simple dish or something more complicated. You can cook something decadent or something super basic and healthy. Having those kinds of choices is a good feeling.

Life Sustaining
It feels good to be able to create something that is life-sustaining. I like to cook for my family and also enjoy cooking for myself. Being able to provide nourishment is a great feeling.
Focus
It's easy to get centered and focused when you cook. It's a step-by-step process and you need to sort out the steps and take them methodically in order. Doing something that helps me get focused feels comfortable and enjoyable. It's definitely my happy place.
Giving
I enjoy giving and being able to cook for someone is a pleasurable giving experience for me. Even if I'm cooking for myself, I still feel like it's a giving experience. Why do I feel this way? The answer is likely connected to my experience of growing up, cooking on the farm for my family. I often helped my mom in the kitchen. I enjoyed making casseroles, mock duck, pineapple upside-down cake, and apple-rhubarb pandowdy. It feel great when our family enjoyed the food that I had prepared.
Confidence
Cooking helps me feel confident. I know I will always have a second chance to improve at cooking, so I feel like I can continue to get better at cooking. As I improve, I will become more confident with what I'm doing in the kitchen.
Cleaning Up
This may sound strange to you, but I enjoy cleaning up. Like Thich Nhat Hanh, I find washing dishes to be a very mindful experience. Do you enjoy washing dishes? Let me know cleaning up is a mindful experience for you. Email me your thoughts, at bruce@mindfulnessmode.com

Most Influential Person
- Jesus, because of what he accomplished. He was about teaching us about love.
Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness helps me deal with my emotions by questioning how I feel when someone criticizes me. I used to be triggered by criticism a lot because I experienced it frequently while growing up.
- Now, I remind myself that it's just someone's opinion, and I evaluate if there's any truth to it. Our thoughts turn into emotions, and those emotions can become beliefs if we dwell on them.
- I don't want negative beliefs, so I stay aware of my emotions and thoughts.
- I also consider that the person criticizing me might be having a bad day, so I try not to judge them.
- Being mindful means being aware of my feelings and thoughts and choosing the beliefs I want to hold onto.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Take a moment, sit on a bench, and breathe the fresh air. It can make you feel so much better.
- For me, nature is essential; I grew up in the mountains, and it's a big part of who we are.
- I recommend going out there and feeling nature, even touching the grass with your feet.

Bullying Story
- Regarding bullying, Janet talked about how being aware and mindful of our words and actions is crucial, especially when we interact with children.
- Our beliefs can pass down to them, so it's essential to set a positive example.
- Bullying often happens when someone lacks self-esteem and hasn't learned how to treat others with kindness.
- While we must protect ourselves from harm, it's also important to have compassion for the bully, as they might have learned hurtful behavior from somewhere else.
Words of Wisdom
- I would say that success in every area of your life is real and obtainable. But the power is always in our hands. Because we get we've been given choice. That's the one thing we have given choice and free will.
- And so when you can look at the landscape that way, if you see something that's not working for you, or you're not living the life that you want to live, go out and figure it out, sit down and sit in the feeling of where it's coming from because you'll discover it, and then you can change it.

The Mindfulness of Yard Care
Monday Jul 24, 2023
Monday Jul 24, 2023
Mindfulness and Yard Care is the topic of today’s episode. Taking care of the yard can have a strong element of mindfulness to it, and that’s exactly why I decided to focus on the mindfulness of yard care for today’s episode. I’m talking particularly about looking after your plants and flowers.
I still spend a lot of time looking after my yard today, and I find it to be quite a mindful experience. It involves planting and watering the flowers and trimming bushes and shrubs.
Safety First
If you’re practicing mindfulness while doing a task like grasscutting, your safety is the most important element to be concerned about. Wear steel-toed boots and long pants to be as safe as possible. Your mind should always be first and foremost on the task at hand. For today’s episode, I will mostly talk about planting and caring for flowers around your property.

7 Ways Looking After Your Yard Can Be Mindful
1/ Focus on Sounds
2/ Notice the Colors
3/ Be Aware of the Air
4/ Notice Your Breathing
5/ See the Clouds
6/ Say an Affirmation
7/ Enjoy the Appearance
Focus On Sounds
- Maybe you’re hearing birds, crickets, cattle, or chickens, or maybe you’re in a town or city environment where you’re hearing traffic or children or construction sounds.
- Whatever you’re hearing, practice becoming aware of the sounds, and then letting them go into a mix of released sound.
Notice The Colors
- Enjoy the colors of the flowers or bushes you’re working on. Are there vivid reds and yellows or various shades of greens?
- Allow yourself to see the beauty in all of the colors nature has surrounded you with.
Be Aware of the Air
- Be one with nature by being aware of the air around you. Are there pleasant aromas and scents in the outdoor air? Do you smell the grass or certain plants?
- Maybe you’re noticing some earthy smells or some herbs or spicy smells.
- Do those smells remind you of anything from the past?
- Smells and aromas can be an extremely powerful link to the past.
- Allow yourself to go to some past place or experience that may be conjured up by the scent in the air.
Notice Your Breathing
- Decide to do nose-breathing; in for 7, pause for 2, and out of the mouth for 5.
- It’s fun to allow yourself to focus on breathing, especially while you’re doing easy and routine tasks you’re very familiar with.
See The Clouds
- Notice the color, texture, and movement of the clouds as you work away at each of the particular tasks.
- Look for images in the clouds or maybe there’s a message there? Be open to any messages that exist there, no matter how fleeting.
Say An Affirmation
- Say an affirmation over and over to yourself as you work on your yard work. Something like, “I am so happy and fortunate in this present moment to be surrounded by nature’s beauty.”
- I just did an online search and found this one that I really like: My spirit is nourished by spending time in nature.
Enjoy The Appearance
- Allow yourself to enjoy the look of the flowers, bushes, and hedges you’ve been working on.
- Notice the overall appearance and the beauty of the different textures and the other elements like fences, flower pots, bird baths, or other features.
- Maybe you have a trellis with climbing vines or hollyhocks that are taller than people.

Boundaries and Mindfulness
Monday Jul 17, 2023
Monday Jul 17, 2023
Boundaries and mindfulness is the topic of today's episode. Why might boundaries be an issue for you? Think about the answers to these questions. Do you feel used? Do you feel like you’re constantly being dragged into things you’re uncomfortable with? Are you angry about how people treat you? Do you feel overly upset over things that don’t concern you, like a news story you’ve heard or something that happened to people you don’t know?
Boundaries and mindfulness are related. Mindfulness is partly about being aware, about being content and happy, and satisfied. It’s about feeling in control rather than out of control.
Here are 5 ways you can bump up your boundaries so that your life will be better.

Effect on Emotions
- As we grow older, we gain more life experience and realize that we have gone through various emotions in the past. Sometimes, when we are in the midst of strong emotions, it feels like they will never go away.
- However, Connie explained a powerful technique called the “do nothing meditation,” which she considers one of the most effective tools she discusses in her book.
- In this meditation, you simply sit quietly for 10 minutes without doing anything specific. You are not thinking, planning, meditating, or praying. Instead, you allow yourself to become a bit bored and just be in the present moment.
- This practice helps the emotions we are experiencing to gradually fade away. Moreover, it can also bring forth wonderful ideas and insights.
- Connie emphasized that dealing with emotions effectively comes with practice and the realization that we have successfully survived all of our emotions in the past.
- As we grow older, we occasionally remember this truth, which helps us navigate and cope with our feelings more confidently.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Breathing is something I don't delve into too much, but I attend yoga classes regularly where I receive lots of suggestions about it.
- Even my little granddaughter, who is being taught by her mom, tells me to take a deep breath when I'm feeling stressed.
- It's amazing how just a couple of deep breaths can make a difference. I've learned that even two or three deep breaths can change your body chemistry and help you feel calmer.
- So, taking a moment to breathe deeply can be really helpful in calming down and finding balance.

Bullying Story
- Connie recounted her experience of being bullied by an addicted housemate. When under the influence of alcohol, he would say hurtful things, questioning Connie's worth and intelligence. As a sensitive person, these comments deeply affected her, leading her to doubt herself and wonder if she was truly inadequate.
- However, a pivotal moment occurred when the housemate said something particularly nasty and untrue. In response, Connie found the courage to stand up for herself. She firmly declared that she no longer needed to listen to his words when he was under the influence. This incident became a catalyst for change in her life.
- Connie came to realize that the hurtful remarks were more a reflection of the housemate's own issues and addiction rather than a true reflection of her value.
- From that point on, she adopted a resilient mindset, separating herself from the negativity. She understood that hurtful comments had no connection to her true self-worth and identity. This transformative experience allowed Connie to embrace her own strength and rise above the hurtful words of others.
Words of Wisdom
- Connie shared her insights on the connection between decluttering and experiencing endorphins. She noted that not only do you feel endorphins from physical activities like a 30-minute walk, but also from emotional releases such as crying. These endorphins play a role in improving overall health and well-being.
- However, Connie emphasized that the key is simply being happy. Decluttering is not always necessary; what truly matters is making the decision to be happy, regardless of the presence or absence of material possessions. In her view, finding happiness is the ultimate goal, and it can be achieved through various means.
- Ultimately, Connie's message is clear: prioritize happiness in your life. Whether you choose to declutter or not, the important thing is to focus on cultivating happiness and embracing a positive mindset. Discover the rush of decluttering to enhance wellness in your life.

Birds and Mindfulness

Birds and mindfulness is the topic of today's episode. You might remember me telling you about planting various flowers around my house and how having plants around me adds to the mindfulness in my life. Well, back in May, I made a new flower bed just for Black-Eyed Susans. Every time I look out our big window into the backyard, I see the beautiful bright yellow-orange flowers. Well this episode isn’t about flowers, it’s about birds, but they are closely related, at least in my mind.
When I got married, I discovered my new in-laws were avid bird-watchers. When my wife and I would visit my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, we’d be deep in conversation, and suddenly everyone would run to the window to see a specific kind of bird that had appeared at the bird feeder. The conversation would be immediately redirected. This was all new for me.
In the past, my wife’s aunt June would watch and count birds for certain organizations, I think, BirdLife International or Birdcount.org. I was always amazed that she knew about and could identify dozens and probably hundreds of different birds.

The Joy From Birds
- A growing body of scientific evidence also shows that the joy delivered by birds is real. Research increasingly links exposure to nature—and specifically, exposure to birds—with improved well-being. In December, a new study by the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research connected greater bird biodiversity to increased life-satisfaction for more than 26,000 people in 26 European countries.
- It turns out the people who live near natural areas with a greater diversity of bird species were simply happier. In fact, the study found that seeing 10 percent more bird species generates satisfaction on par with a comparable increase in income.
Birds Can Do This
- seeing and hearing birds can improve well-being.
- Bird exposure is effective for those suffering with depression, or without.
- Birds can bring longer-lasting psychological, intellectual, and social well-being.
5 Ways Noticing Birds Can Boost Mindfulness.
- Heightened Awareness: Noticing birds in your surroundings encourages you to be more present and attentive to the environment. It helps you cultivate a sense of mindfulness by focusing your attention on the present moment and the natural world around you.
- Deepening Observation Skills: Birdwatching requires keen observation skills, such as noticing different colors, patterns, behaviors, and sounds. Engaging in this practice sharpens your ability to observe details and enhances your overall mindfulness.
- Connection to Nature: Birds are an integral part of the natural ecosystem, and observing them can deepen your connection to nature. By being aware of their presence and interactions, you develop a sense of interconnectedness with the environment, promoting a mindful and appreciative mindset.
- Cultivating Curiosity: Birdwatching often sparks curiosity and a sense of wonder about the natural world. As you observe different bird species, you may find yourself seeking knowledge, researching their behaviors, habitats, and characteristics. This curiosity fosters an inquisitive and mindful mindset.
- Engaging the Senses: Birdwatching stimulates multiple senses, such as sight, sound, and sometimes even touch. Paying attention to the melodies, calls, and movements of birds can create a sensory-rich experience that draws you into the present moment and cultivates mindfulness through sensory awareness.

Words of Wisdom
- I suggest we allow birds to help guide us into a deeper state of presence, serenity, and connection. Notice the melodies of their songs and the graceful and almost miraculous way they effortlessly fly around above us.
- Let birds be a constant reminder of the beauty and peace that surrounds us, inviting us to live fully in each moment with mindfulness and appreciation.
- And remember the black-eyed Susans I planted in the backyard? Just yesterday, I looked out there and saw two yellow finches having a great time drinking nectar from the flowers, flitting around, and looking like they were in heaven. That in itself was a gift of mindfulness.
