Is The 4-Day Workweek Feasible?
- Some countries are shifting to the 4-day workweek. The four day work week is a step that we're seeing, that for society is actually happening.
- We see countries like New Zealand, Spain, and in Iceland a study just came out where 2500 people did a four day workweek. Kickstarter is switching over to it. Even small community colleges like Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Michigan switched over to it five years ago and they are saving millions of dollars on air conditioning costs in the summer.
- So we see that there are all these business applications for the 4-day work week.
Iceland Study Details
- It was a multi-year study of 2,500 people in tons of different industries. It wasn't just automotive workers or teachers, it was across the board in a number of different sub-sections of society. They found that productivity was up in four days. They found that creativity and happiness was up. An unexpected outcome was that their health outcomes were better. They were less stressed and less anxious.

Life Challenges
- In 2012 it all hit the fan at once. My daughter had heart surgery and as soon as the doctors said she was good and healthy, two weeks later I was diagnosed with cancer. My best friend's wife had breast cancer, my grandma died, it was just one of those terrible years. We all have one at some point unfortunately.
- I was working at a community college at the time, full time. I had my side counseling practice and had just started a podcast, The Practice of the Practice podcast. So I had all these things going on, and this little baby girl who'd just had heart surgery.
- I started to think about my forty-hour a week job. Really, it wasn't one of those jobs that I hated. I had autonomy, I had influence, my boss was amazing, so it was even harder, because it paid well and I had a great job. I could have stayed there for my whole career.
- But the central question I asked myself was, ‘would I rather stay and never know what I have inside of me, or would I rather leave and potentially fail. And to me that was such a central question. I decided I'd rather leave and potentially fail and if I failed I could always come back to the counseling world.
- So I left my full-time job and started Practice of the Practice podcast. Over the years I found that I was saying the same thing over and over. It was around time and the best use of my time.
- At a certain point you need to stop taking out the trash. To have someone else do that so you can focus on those higher level things in your business and in your life.
