- Eckhart Tolle, Author of The Power of Now
Effect on Emotions
- Mindfulness has made me less irritable and less reactive. Definitely that wasn't the case previously. Throughout much of my twenties, I was the type of person who would respond with an involuntary reaction rather than with voluntary reason. That manifested itself in relationships with girlfriends and family. I would be more inclined to snap rather than to have a conversation.
- Nowadays, mindfulness is like a muscle, the more you train it the more it becomes second nature. Now if something negative happens, I take it as an opportunity to get better. I will say, great, this happened, let's respond in a positive way and let's find a solution. That's been huge for me because it's so easy to go through life in a reactive state.
Thoughts on Breathing
- Oh yes, breathing. Yesterday I was hosting a podcast, and even though I am 311 episodes in, I always get a little bit of anxiety before a podcast episode. So before this particular episode, I went for a twenty minute walk and then I just sat in a quiet meeting room at our office and I just breathed for five minutes, deep breathing, focusing on the breath. That just brought me right back down.
