Effect on Emotions

  • The emotions are still the same; they come, they go. I am able to relate more skillfully and wholesomely to them most of the time. There's definitely more space, less identification with them. I can be with them [emotions] without getting swept away.

Thoughts on Breathing

  • The breath and the body are great anchors. The breath is always right there. The body is always in the present moment. To feel yourself breathing, you are already connected to your life and to reality.

Bullying Story

  • I've been in both positions [bullied and bullier]. As a result of being bullied, I can very easily shut myself off as a protection mechanism. That's something that I've had to work with.
  • As soon as I get into an argument with somebody, I can shut off, so it doesn't matter what you say to me, it's not going to hurt. Then I can come back, [saying] you're not going to hurt me because I've cut myself off. I'm going to be the one who's going to hurt you. That's the way that I've grown up as a way to keep myself safe.
  • For me, mindfulness is realizing that the other person is a person. When you're younger and you're making fun of somebody, I don't think you make that connection.
